NPR: “South African politics may have just changed permanently, from an era of one party rule. Within the country’s proportional representation system, more parties and independent candidates than ever are forming and providing an alternative — a reality the ANC must now grapple with.” Excellent overview of dramatically important national elections in SA.

The African National Congress (ANC), which has ruled South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, has suffered a significant defeat in the latest national election. With support dropping to just over 40%, this marks a historic shift away from the ANC’s long-standing dominance. Factors like corruption, economic challenges, and public disillusionment have contributed to this outcome. Opposition parties, notably the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), have gained considerable ground, ushering in a more competitive political landscape. #southafrica #politicalchange #anc #election2024

Today marks the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s first-ever democratic elections, which were fully inclusive of all South Africans, regardless of ethnicity. The polls marked a break from the repressive apartheid system that underpinned white minority rule. The April 27, 1994, elections led to the sweeping victory of the African National Congress and the election of Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned for 27 years during Apartheid, as the first president of South Africa from the country’s black majority. Two years earlier, in a historic referendum organized by President Frederik Willem de Klerk, white South Africans voted in favor of reforms to end apartheid and establish a power-sharing multi-ethnic government. HRF remembers South Africa’s first democratic elections as the consecration of a peaceful transition from Apartheid. HRF urges vigilance against democratic erosion, as impunity for high-level corruption and inequality weaken public trust in democracy.

On May 29 South Africans will head to the polls for their national elections. 📌 More than 50 parties are vying to win seats in parliament, which then appoints the president. This is an important election, particularly for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) which is losing ground among voters. But there are also other contenders like the EFF, DA, and uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK). But here is more information on the contenders in this article I worked on: #SAelections #2024elections #DW #SouthAfrica https://lnkd.in/eFPtXJEt

In #Greece, while the performance of the economy is unremarkable, the daily hardships of the sovereign debt crisis are increasingly becoming a distant memory for the average citizen. Meaningful policy proposals for the future of the #EuropeanUnion are absent from both major and minor political parties. Instead, Paris Aslanidis writes the European elections will be used to assess three important domestic political dynamics: the current electoral appeal of New Democracy, the performance of the Greek far right and competition on the left of the Greek party system. Takeaways from South Africa’s 2024 Elections: -You cannot underfund the IEC, impose delivery pressures and expect no glitches. They needed better trained officials, clarity of conduct and additional resources. We need to relook IEC operations -When your voters say they are unhappy with service delivery and you don’t listen to them, you will pay for it. -The biggest mistake to be made by the ANC was to underestimate someone who was the Head of Intelligence of the ANC, the President of the ANC, the President of the Republic. Jacob Zuma was never going to go gently into the dark night. -I find it peculiar that “markets” and the “rand” becomes so erratic at the mention of Jacob Zuma’s name. And yet currency manipulation scandal, Phala Phala didn’t shift market sentiment so drastically. The “markets” seem to have human-like patterns -The strategy for the ANC now is to find a sustainable coalition. One that will not alienate it from future voters. One that shows the black majority that they’ve listened. -South Africans are going to learn in these uncharted waters how to live, thrive, build without politicians. If the politics don’t get it right, it doesn’t mean the people won’t get it right. Did I miss anything?

The African National Congress (ANC) has expelled its former president, Jacob Zuma, following his endorsement of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) and subsequent leadership of the breakaway faction. The move marks a significant rupture within South Africa’s ruling party and underscores the shifting political landscape ahead of the forthcoming elections. Zuma’s endorsement and subsequent assumption of leadership within the MKP significantly impacted the ANC’s electoral performance. In the recent elections held on 29 May, the ANC secured only 40% of the national vote, while Zuma’s newly formed MKP achieved a notable 14%, reflecting a substantial defection of support from the ANC.
