Whats your views on IT ? The recent decision by the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Patna to impose application fees for their Institutional Post Doctoral Fellowship (IPDF) has sparked alarm. This unprecedented move, demanding 1000 INR from General and OBC candidates, risks setting a dangerous precedent for other academic institutions to follow suit in monetizing postdoctoral fellowship applications. This development is deeply troubling, given the already daunting challenge of securing postdoctoral positions, compounded by a recent surge in PhD admissions. Introducing application fees adds another barrier, potentially deterring numerous researchers from pursuing academic careers. While the financial impact on IIT Patna may be minimal, the toll on individual researchers is immense. there is an urgent appeal to the Director of IIT Patna to reconsider this decision, as it threatens to stifle research opportunities and worsen the brain drain crisis facing the nation. Attending a conference to present your work is a fantastic way to wrap up your undergraduate thesis. For the last six months, starting in July 2024, I have been working at the SDSL lab of Dr. Punnag Chatterjee, PhD at the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad. I completed my second conference paper (and first paper as the first author) titled "Application of Uniform Field Method to analytically model smart-material based bending actuators operating under d33 mode" under his direction and mentorship. Through the processes of #Homogenisation and the theories of #UniformFieldMethod and #MixingRules, this research addressed the issue of harnessing actuation from piezoelectric-based actuators when utilised not alone but in the form of composites. Due to its brittle nature, piezoelectric devices when used alone, can only be used for limited amount of strain, which is insufficient for any kind of actuation. When used with layers of Kapton and in a solution of Matrix Epoxy as a #MacroFibreComposite #MFC, we can use to achieve a wider range of actuation in terms of strain. I presented my paper at #COPEN13 at National Institute of Technology Calicut held during December 13-15 at their campus. #COPEN13 successfully created an environment that helped us all connect with experts from Academia and Industry from across the nation. My personal favorite session was the talk given by Prof. B Ravi, Director, #NITK, Surathkal. Where his #mantra of #Paper to #Patent to #Product to #Process is something I think we all should adopt. At the end after all these research and papers and patents, we should aim for the final product that can be used advantageously for the mankind.
