Join us this Thursday! For years, we viewed data as an input—a tool for decision-making. Now, in the age of AI, data is critical infrastructure, driving the digital economy, surveillance, and politics. Its life cycle—production, storage, and dissemination—mirrors that of essential infrastructure but brings environmental costs, from energy use to e-waste. To ensure AI systems are sustainable, infrastructure must focus on energy efficiency, ethical data use, minimizing carbon footprints, and balancing innovation with environmental responsibility. 📢 Register Here: https://lnkd.in/exuaKeDe We also invite you to complete a short survey on sustainable AI. Your insights will help shape the discussion during the webinar. 📊 Complete the Survey: https://bit.ly/4cxCAdW #IEEE #SustainableAI #CleanTechSolutions#AI

https://hubs.ly/Q02PzBmc0 In my latest blog, I reflect on a recent insightful conversation with Neeraj Kumar, Chief Data Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory about AI’s double-edged sword—driving innovation while tackling energy challenges. Neeraj shared how PNNL and Micron are optimizing memory systems to cut AI’s energy footprint without compromising power. ⚡️ We explore how AI can fuel scientific discovery and combat climate change—but only if we crack the sustainability code. Check out the blog linked above to learn more about balancing AI’s potential with environmental responsibility! #AIHWSummit #AI #PNNL #PacificNorthwestNationalLaboratory

The rapid advancement and increasing demand for generative artificial intelligence (AI), are significantly contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from #datacenters, according to recent research. A study by Morgan Stanley predicts that the data centre industry is on track to emit 2.5 billion tons of GHGs by 2030 - this figure is three times higher than what was previously projected without the influence of generative AI. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eCDtkH3V

This is a very interesting article around Sustainability in AI, it talks about the fact that whilst everyone is focused on the power and cooling of the compute aspects, the Data side is growing at massive scale, especially as we will run out of real data for model building so the levels of synthetic data will escalate dramatically. The key message here is to grab hold of your data management now, ensure that you have what you need, where you need it and get rid of the ROT (Redundant, Obselete and Toxic Data), that way you will be AI-ready both in terms of performance and in energy efficiency https://lnkd.in/eyEhfn9q

Research, not vibes, should be the basis for AI regulation. A research-first approach to regulating emerging technologies is a wise, efficient, and effective approach. The IIHS smashes cars into walls so that we can set new design standards. The IPCC relies on a global set of climate experts to identify the most pressing climate risks. In short, there's a virtuous research-regulation cycle that should be emulated in the AI context. Thanks to The Lawfare Institute for the chance to share this deep dive on different research proposals, such as a CERN for AI and IPCC for AI. This piece benefited from excellent edits and comments from Alan Rozenshtein, Chinmayi Sharma, Yonathan Arbel and many others! (all mistakes are my own). https://lnkd.in/eEAuaJ5R
