Consider solar power, which is presently dominating the global green transition and giving the world its feel-good story. In 2023, the world including China installed 425 gigawatts of new solar power; the world without China installed only 162 gigawatts. China accounted for 263 gigawatts; the United States accounted for just 33. As recently as 2019, China was installing about one-quarter of global solar capacity additions; last year, it managed 62 percent more than the rest of the world combined. Over those same five years, China grew its amount of new added capacity more than eight times over; the world without China didn’t even double its rate. https://lnkd.in/dargSVJR

Reports suggest that about 74% of the total investments in solar energy have, so far, gone to the developed countries and China. The share goes to 80% of total investment if India is added to the list. The other developing countries, mainly the least developing ones, are, however, struggling to get the share. #ISA #InternationalSolarFestival2024 #Solar

Solar surged in 2023 📈 74% more solar was installed in 2023 than in 2022, the fastest percentage rise since 2011. China installed 55% more solar capacity than the previous year x4.5 faster than the G7 (+12%). 28 countries built more than 1 GW of new solar capacity in 2023. Counties include France, Germany and India to name just three. Despite being home to almost a fifth of the world’s population, Africa accounted for only 0.2% of solar additions in 2023 and 0.8% of wind, adding less than 1 GW of each.

Exponential growth in solar is going to surpass expectations (again) and make the IEA look like amateurs (again). A new analysis from Ember predicts that 593 GW of solar installations will be added globally by the end of 2024. That's almost 200 GW higher than the IEA’s main case from January 2024. China is on track to install 334 GW alone - which would put it at 56% of the global total.

China is leading the world in building clean energy sources: A recent report finds that the amount of wind and solar capacity under construction in China is now double that of the rest of the world combined. China currently has a total of 339GW of wind and solar power under construction, drastically overtaking the 40GW under construction in the US. This recent boom in renewables has been assisted by strong governmental support in China. President Xi Jinping has emphasized the need for "new quality productive forces," signifying a desire to shift the Chinese economy towards technology and strengthen green manufacturing. Still, analysts suggest that more additional renewable capacity is necessary to meet China's growing energy demand. Read more at: https://lnkd.in/deHWXWXR via The Guardian

Exciting Growth in Global Solar Capacity! 🌍 According to Ember's latest report, the global solar capacity is expected to grow by 593 GW by the end of 2024, a 29% increase from last year! This growth is largely driven by China, which alone is projected to contribute 334 GW, representing 56% of the total new capacity. Remarkably, from January to June 2024, China's installations surpassed its entire 2022 output, marking a 28% year-over-year increase. Other key players like the U.S., India, and Germany are also making significant strides, with India exceeding its 2023 total by May. While solar panel prices may not be a limiting factor, the report emphasizes the need for adequate grid capacity and energy storage solutions to manage this rapid growth effectively. As countries ramp up their solar initiatives, ensuring robust infrastructure will be essential for realizing this potential. 🌱 🔗 What strategies are you considering to harness the benefits of this solar boom? #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #GlobalGrowth

🌞 China’s Solar Sector: A Comeback Story? 🌱 It’s encouraging to see signs of recovery in China’s solar industry after the turbulence of the past decade. The sector’s challenges — from overcapacity to plummeting prices — have been well-documented. However, as we move into 2025, it’s clear that solar remains at the forefront of global energy conversations. Reading this article from the Financial Times, I couldn’t help but reflect on how the shifts in China’s market impact the wider industry. From soaring demand for polysilicon to massive infrastructure projects like the "Solar Great Wall," it’s clear that China’s influence in driving the future of renewables remains unmatched. The challenge now is ensuring that Europe and the UK remain competitive in this space. Collaboration, innovation, and events like ours are more critical than ever to foster partnerships and keep up momentum in driving forward clean energy solutions. Would love to hear your thoughts on what this means for the solar sector globally. 🌍
China’s solar sector could be on course for a glow-up
