We have 6 weeks until the new EU commissioners start working on their agenda for the coming years. Why is the EU Inc needed? The European startup scene is often compared to the US, but this comparison isn't valid. 1️⃣ Unlike in the US, continent-wide investments and collaboration are rare in Europe—less than 18% of first-round investments are pan-European. The complexity of navigating multiple legal systems is a key barrier. 2️⃣ Founders are stuck in national silos, which are limiting opportunities, slowing funding, and hindering innovation. 3️⃣ A pan-European startup entity could standardize investment processes, level the playing field, and unify the ecosystem. Easier collaboration, faster investments and hence more opportunities for founders. It could also harmonize stock options, simplify cross-border employment, and set a standard even beyond the EU. 4️⃣ Europe can become the best place for innovators, and creating a shared startup standard is the first step. Reality is founders spend a lot of time talking to lawyers and other founders about how to setup their companies in different countries. It's very expensive and slow for a startup and we're never sure we are doing everything exactly right. You could end up paying €50,000 out of a €300,000 yearly budget just to be able to sell your product in another country. So people don't do that but they set themselves up for high potential tax liability and time-sucking questionnaires and paper-filing. Also, why would we not want to make it easy for employees to have ownership in companies? It's pretty crazy in Finland that it's very hard to give people ownership without them getting taxed before they get any money. Same in Sweden, it's just really difficult and risks are high. Let's just make it easier quickly.
