Great news for animals! As the 8-month-long process of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture reaches its conclusion, it is welcoming to see consensus by all stakeholders on the urgent need for a revision of EU #animalwelfare legislation by 2026 including the phasing out of cages in EU farming systems. Other key points mentioned were: ✅ The need for policies ensuring that sustainable and healthy food is widely available, accessible, affordable and attractive to European consumers. ✅ The need for the introduction of a comprehensive, multi-tiered EU-wide animal welfare #labelling scheme. ✅ A recommendation for faster regulatory pathways for #innovative products and processes focused on #sustainability. ✅ A call for the adoption of “import requirements in EU law consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organisation (#WTO), including to benefit animal welfare”. These conclusions are set to inform the European Commission on its vision for agriculture and food, promised to be presented in the first 100 days of the new term. Time to act. Which interventions could mitigate the rise of industrial animal agriculture in Africa? 🐖Overview and Policy Advocacy (post 1 of 4)🐖 During our first training programme, we investigated evidence-based strategies to address the growth of industrial animal agriculture in Africa, which has detrimental effects on animal welfare, climate, public health, and food security. We aggregated insights from various sources, including our recent collaboration with Bryant Research, and evaluated them to develop a set of recommendations. Policy advocacy emerged as our primary recommendation as public policies, if successfully implemented and enforced, provide a strong lever for influencing the lives of a large number of animals. We recommend the following specific interventions: 1. Higher welfare standards for farmed animals 2. Shifting government subsidies away from animal agriculture and/or towards plant-based agriculture or higher welfare animal agriculture 3. Environmental regulations and other food and agricultural production standards for animal farms 4. Protection of local, small farmers and mitigation of centralisation of multinationals Read the full report below which provides implementation guidelines tailored to general and country-specific contexts: https://lnkd.in/d4gGJBPN https://lnkd.in/ddtc9ZXW

The livestock export industry is at the forefront in developing innovative methods to further understand and enhance animal welfare. The latest project aims to create a system capable of accurately interpreting the animal welfare data being collected on livestock export ships and providing insights to help inform decision-making to further improve welfare outcomes. A strategic collaboration has been formed between the Livestock Export RD&E Program and a research group led by The University of Western Australia to undertake this initiative. If successful, the system will support decision-making by exporters and their on-board teams, based on real-time data on the welfare status of their livestock. It will also enable post-voyage evaluation of welfare outcomes and provide another avenue for transparent reporting of conditions on ships. Watch the below animation or head to our website to learn more about the latest project: https://lnkd.in/grk_V_e4 #animalwelfare
