On #WorldWaterDay, we reflect on the vital role water plays in sustaining agriculture. This precious resource not only sustains our bodies, but also nurtures our planet’s ecosystems and agricultural systems. Water plays a pivotal role in maintaining soil health and fostering crop growth, thus bolstering food security and nutrition. See how the HortiNigeria Program educates and empowers farmers on water conservation practices through its training on eco-efficient and production practices. Let's face it: 80 is a HUGE number! For decades IIRR has been dedicated to helping smallholder farmers mitigate the devastating effects of climate hazards. By providing innovative solutions and sustainable practices, we aim to enhance their resilience and ensure food security. Some of our recent impacts: I. Over 100,000 farmers trained in climate-smart agriculture techniques, resulting in a 20% increase in crop yields. ii. Implemented 50+ water conservation projects to combat drought, benefiting 75,000 households. iii. Reduced soil erosion in 200 communities through agroforestry practices, enhancing soil fertility and crop productivity. These achievements are a testament to the power of community-driven solutions and sustainable agriculture. We continue to believe that by working together, we can build a more resilient and prosperous future for smallholder farmers worldwide. Innovative Solutions such as: i. Adoption of drought-resistant crops and integrated pest management. ii. Utilization of solar-powered irrigation systems to ensure efficient water use. iii. Promotion of organic farming practices to maintain soil health and biodiversity. Thank you to our dedicated teams, partners, and the resilient farmers who are at the heart of these transformative efforts. With bold and big bets, perhaps we can stay clear of reaching that 80%. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Agriculture #ClimateAction #FoodSecurity #SustainableDevelopment #Farmers #GreenEnergy #EcoFriendly #ClimateCrisis #EnvironmentalProtection #DisasterPreparedness

When tackling complex challenges in agriculture, it's crucial to go back to the basics. The Fusarium wilt issue affecting banana farming, particularly in lowland areas, poses a significant threat. Without a clear action plan, the situation could only escalate with climate change. Traditional methods centered on pathogen eradication may not offer sustainable solutions in the long run. The disease triangle model offers a practical approach by highlighting environmental modifications to decrease disease favorability, enabling banana cultivation even in the presence of Fusarium in the soil. Improving soil drainage stands out as a vital step in combating Fusarium wilt. Areas with drainage issues are identifiable, allowing for feasible corrective measures to be put in place. #Agriculture #FusariumWilt #BananaIndustry #SustainableFarming

A new post, “Wet weather and temporary adjustments to agri-environment agreements” has just been published on the Gov.UK Farming blog. Heavy rainfall has a devastating and long-term impact on farming. This disruption not only affects livelihoods but also has wider implications for food security and the economy too. Gov.UK are introducing temporary adjustments and easements within the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), the SFI Pilot, Countryside Stewardship (CS) and Environmental Stewardship (ES) to support farmers and land managers dealing with the impacts of severe weather in England. 🍔 🍿 🥦 European farmers will face several challenges in the future, as they continue to supply food and non-food products and at the same time, contribute to this transition. The challenges are wide ranging and include: climate change, resource scarcity, infrastructural issues and changes in food demand or diet habits. The study "Farmers of the Future", published by Anne-Katrin Bock, Maciej Krzysztofowicz, Jennifer Rudkin, and Vera Winthagen of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has explored who the farmers that will be dealing with those challenges in the future will be. This report presents the results of that exploration, describing the 2040 landscape of farmers and presenting policy implications.
