For those focused on economic development in CT, this is an important read.
DEEP’s visit to the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce last month highlighted the benefits of the proposed Release-Based Cleanup Regulations to stakeholders from business and industry to banking to municipal officials. To more efficiently address polluted properties in our state, DEEP has been working in partnership with Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and the Release-Based Cleanup Working Group to rethink our cleanup framework. 48 states already follow a release-based system, it’s time for #Connecticut to join in the benefit of faster, cheaper, and more predictable cleanups. Read up on how Goal 1 of 20BY26 makes the most of this partnership. https://lnkd.in/gEemqR-E

Short and long term support for small isolated systems at work here! Super important on many levels: · We know that many small systems are not financially or operationally sustainable. One key solution is to consolidate the small system into a nearby regional authority. A key challenge is who will bear the expenses of developing a consolidation analysis and plan. · These small systems, mostly serving manufactured homes for Spanish-speaking families who work on farms, are falling in part and put these hardy people at risk. · Moonshot Missions is able through the #WaterTA program to provide support to prepare these systems for consolidation – evaluating engineering and governance issues. · Moonshot Missions also seeks to implement immediate steps to help secure clean water until consolidation can occur. A local community group with relationships in the region is essential – and we are blessed by the efforts of Pueblo Unido. Love this work by our #EFC West team, including Lydia Rossiter Reshet S. Gebremariam Joy Pearson EIT, MBA Genevieve Mancuso, P.E. Do you know a small system that can use a helpful hand to evaluate a plan to consolidate with a nearby Authority? Moonshot Missions is at the ready: info@moonshotmissions.org
Moonshot Missions visited the Coachella Valley to meet with small community water system owners. In partnership with Pueblo Unido, Moonshot hosted a community meeting to have a discussion and allow system owners to ask questions regarding the consolidation efforts of the Coachella Valley Water District. Moonshot Missions is working to meet the immediate needs of the systems and help the owners prepare for future consolidation. Check out this extremely interesting post from my colleague Alex!
The CPAWS · SNAP Canada Ocean Team has been super busy over the past few months on an exciting new project that is unlike anything we've done before... We've travelled from BC to the Bay of Fundy, from the St Lawrence River to St Johns, and all the way north to the frozen shores of the Hudson Bay and the polar bear capital of the world - Churchill, Manitoba. Our mission, to get people talking about the ocean and listen to what they have to say. Thanks to CPAWS chapters across Canada and Angus McAllister and his research team for undertaking this wild ride with us. We'll be sharing the results of this work far and wide over coming months - including a session at #IMCC7 this October. Stay tuned for more info. https://lnkd.in/gs8Sv9ce

Empowering Communities: The SCLR Approach in Las Nieves In 2023 and 2024, climate-induced floods devastated communities across Mindanao, displacing thousands and disrupting livelihoods. Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte, was among the hardest hit. As the waters receded, the 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗟𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 (𝗦𝗖𝗟𝗥) 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵, championed by 𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗕, offered a powerful solution. Through micro-grants, local communities took charge of their own recovery, launching projects like mushroom farming, water system upgrades, and sustainable agriculture. This community-driven response empowered self-help groups (SHGs) to restore livelihoods, enhance food security, and strengthen local leadership. The SCLR approach shifts the focus from external aid to survivor-led recovery, fostering resilience, dignity, and collaboration between communities, local governments, and civil society. Watch how Las Nieves is rebuilding stronger and more self-sufficient. Join us in celebrating these inspiring stories of hope and self-determination! 🌱

The Conversation: Project Manager and Community Leader on Highway Project Negotiations The meeting room is at the #project site office, a modest space with a large table in the center and some coffee on site. The Project Manager, Utf45 and Mr.Tft63, the Community #Leader, sit across from each other. Utf45: (calmly) Mr.Tft63, I want to thank you for taking the time to meet with us today. We understand that the highway project has raised several concerns within your community. And we're here to address them. Mr.Tft63,: (nodding) Thank you, Utf45. Our #community isn't against development. But we need assurances that our livelihoods and environment won't be sacrificed. Farmland is our main source of #income. Utf45: (empathetically) Preserving your community's way of life is important to us too. We have proposed a compensation package for the affected farmers. Additionally, we are offering a land swap to provide fertile land elsewhere. Compensation is helpful, but it's not just about the money. The new #land must be as productive as our current land. Our cultural is an irreplaceable parts of our heritage." said Mr.Tft63, thoughtfully Utf45: (reassuringly) "I completely understand. We are committed to funding the preservation and relocation of #cultural sites. We also plan to establish a local heritage center to celebrate and maintain your community's #history. For the environmental concerns, zet465, our Environmental Specialist, has developed #strategies such as creating wildlife corridors and replanting trees." Mr.Tft63,: (still cautious) Those measures sound promising. How can we be sure that these promises will be kept? We've seen projects come and go with little benefit to the locals. Utf45: (firmly) We propose regular community meetings to keep you updated on the project’s progress. We will establish a grievance redress mechanism that ensures any issues are promptly addressed. Additionally, we will form joint monitoring teams with #community representatives to oversee compliance with environmental and social safeguards. Mr.Tft63,: (relaxing slightly) That sounds more reassuring. Regular #dialogue and genuine involvement are crucial. If you can, put these commitments in writing and ensure they are binding. We might be able to move forward. Utf45: (smiling) Absolutely, Mr. Hasan. We will draft a formal #agreement that includes all these commitments. Our goal is to ensure the highway benefits both the project and your community, said ARIANA WITH A SMILING FACE. Mr.Tft63,: (smiles back) "Thank you, Ariana. I will discuss these proposals with the community and return with our collective decision. It seems we are moving in the right direction." The meeting concludes with a handshake with a cold cup of coffee on the table. In the end, the meeting symbolizes a tentative but hopeful step towards resolving the conflicts and ensuring a collaborative future for the highway project.

Home to 65 species of coral🪸 and more than 500 species of fish🐠 the Mesoamerican reef is a haven for marine biodiversity, while also 2 million people depend on this ecosystem for their livelihoods, nutrition, and coastal protection. 4️⃣We are proud to continue supporting the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) Insurance Programme as it enters its fourth year. This initiative, in collaboration with Mesoamerican Reef Fund and WTW, plays a vital role in protecting one of the most biodiverse and economically crucial ecosystems in the world. 💸The swift payout following Hurricane Lisa in 2022 demonstrated the effectiveness of this parametric insurance solution, helping local communities repair reef damage and restore critical marine habitats. By enabling rapid response, this program strengthens the resilience of coral reefs and the livelihoods of those who rely on them. 🛟This renewal further reinforces the collective commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable recovery in the face of climate risks.
