How an airplane mechanic became a CEO. Back in 2001, a young US Military Veteran called our office for resume services. He’d just gotten out of the Air Force. He was looking to apply for a job at the big airlines. When I interviewed him for his resume, I asked him what job he was after… He said “CEO.” I gave a little chuckle and said, that’s great….but you won’t get a CEO job today, not next week, but someday!” He was an experienced airplane mechanic and that’s the resume we wrote. I advised him to get some experience in training, coaching less experienced mechanics, and operations when he could. Being well rounded would help him reach his goals. A few years later, he came back to us for an update (like many of our clients). He had graduated from college and told me he was pursuing his MBA. I told him how happy I was for him and asked him what he wanted to do. He told me he was applying for an Assistant Operations Manager role at a small regional airport. Through the years, he’d moved around between airline jobs and airport operations jobs. Always keeping his eye on the sky and taking roles that helped him to grow. This year, we completed a resume update for him, spanning the last 7 years since we’d heard from him. He’s just accepted a CEO role for a mid sized aviation maintenance company. It took 23 years. Life is sometimes a step by step journey. You’ll do jobs you love. Jobs you don’t. But if you take each experience, learn what you can, who you want to be (or who you don’t), nothing is unattainable. Even if it feels like it now. #resumewriting #ceo #jobsearch #careers

✈ You would not believe the possible aviation contacts in your own "backyard"! Here is an idea to add to your networking toolbox! Head over to your local FBO! Introduce yourself, ask if they know of any local hiring opportunities (even contract flying!), and see if you can put your info on their bulletin board. Don't forget to ask about any regular fly-ins—attending one can be a blast, even if you drive in. There are often open odd jobs or part-time positions at your small FBO...front desk, mowing the grass, aircraft cleaner...there are many options based on the size of the FBO. If you live in a large area, you likely have multiple small FBO's within a short radius. A pilot friend of mine made it a habit to visit his local FBO so often that he joked that he was possibly annoying them. But it paid off—he made friends, met pilots, and learned a bit about corporate flying options. He secured a 135-flying position around 750 TT by making connections everywhere he went. Hanging out at your local FBO can be a great opportunity to meet pilots, meet aviation people who know other aviation people, and eat warm cookies (some of the nicer FBO's bake them for their incoming clients 🍪 😎). I recently chatted with a low-time pilot who lived about 10 miles from a fairly busy FBO in Arizona. He had no idea where the FBO was. Possibly a wealth of info and opportunities in his backyard! I gave him the address and suggested that he go make friends! For a bit of fun, the first 5 people to send me the name of their town will get a personalized search from me for local aviation-related networking options in your backyard! ✈️ Remember...build your LI connections and follow aviation pages. Expand your online network as well as your network close to home. - - - - - - Like, comment or repost if this info is useful or helpful to you! 😎 #Aviation #PilotLife #CareerTips #FlyInFun #PilotJobs

Gaining More Flight Hours in the Time Building Phase of Your Career... 🛫 A Part 135 Aviation Recruiter’s Perspective… 👩💻 I often speak with low-time pilots who are looking to leave their current employer because they are not getting the hours they expected. It’s a common reason to move on, but before you jump at the next opportunity, here are some steps you can take to hopefully ensure a smart move for your career and logbook. ✈ Ask the right questions throughout all steps of the interview phase – Be direct: “How many hours do your pilots/planes fly?” “Are there times of year where your company’s charter business is slow?” “Will there be opportunities for me to pick up extra flying days?” Don’t worry about asking questions…it shows you're serious about your flight time and signals to the company that you're ready and eager to fly. ✈ Network – Reach out to current pilots at the company. Their insight will give you a real-time snapshot of what life is like on the ground and in the air. ✈ Be patient, but proactive – If you find that the new company likely won’t provide more hours, I often encourage job seekers to stay where they are for now to avoid job-hopping and to build some longevity to strengthen your resume for future opportunities. Asking the right questions ensures you’re fully prepared for your next position. The more you know upfront, the better you can decide if it’s the right fit for your career, your goals, and your hours! #PilotLife #AviationCareers #ChaseThoseHours #FlySmart #LongevityMatters

✈ I love being a pilot. I love flying and exploring and traveling. I love being at the controls and knowing I'm getting people safely to their destination. All that said, I can not stress this enough: As a company have special assignments that people can be a part of. It has so many benefits, one primary one is a better appreciation and understanding of the operation as a whole. When I was a flight attendant I worked in the inflight base supporting operations (so much fun!) and then I became an Instructor/Evaluator. I learned how the hub worked and what it took to put the pieces together. I even helped Catering understand how to repack a galley that was always a mess to put together for a roundtrip transcon. When I became a pilot, I joined the recruiting team at my first company and helped redesign the interview process. Then I became a ground instructor because I wanted to see every new hire succeed in our training process. At my current company I was able to help promote at our booth for a hiring event. Perhaps I'm an outlier, but I love flying and I love this industry. My passion to show others how amazing it is and see companies I work for succeed is definitely #AvGeek level. So, if you are part of a team that needs an extra hand or is willing to let someone see how a process works through shadowing, let us know. 🛫 #AirlineIndustry #AviationJobs
