Reinventing Higher Education and Vocational Training in Côte d’Ivoire: Building Bridges Between Universities and Businesses In Côte d’Ivoire, the higher education and vocational training sector is undergoing a significant transformation. Universities and training centers are increasingly partnering with businesses to align young people’s skills with market realities, thereby enhancing their employability. Strategic Partnerships for Tailored Training Several collaborations highlight this dynamic: Baleine Project: As part of the second phase of this oil and gas project, Saipem and Africa Global Logistics (AGL) launched the fabrication of subsea structures in Côte d’Ivoire in April 2024. This initiative trains a locally skilled workforce and positions the country as a competitive player in the energy industry. (AfrikMonde) Ity and Lafigué Mines: Endeavour Mining, through its foundation, signed agreements with the Ministry of Education to train 150 young people in technical trades such as electricity, masonry, and plumbing. These programs also aim to improve literacy for 500 people in the Hambol region. (Agence Ecofin) Virtual University of Côte d’Ivoire (UVCI) and University of Bondoukou: These institutions collaborate to develop digital education and integrate information technologies into academic programs. This partnership enhances access to quality education for all. Ministry of Technical Education and Accor Hotels Group: In 2024, a convention was signed with three vocational high schools to strengthen training in the hospitality and tourism sectors, offering internships and practical training opportunities. A Win-Win Model for Students and Businesses These partnerships benefit students by equipping them with skills that are directly applicable to their careers. Businesses also gain by accessing a pool of talents trained to meet their specific needs. This ongoing dialogue between academia and the professional world offers a tangible solution to recruitment challenges and competitiveness in a growing market. Reflecting on Inclusivity Despite these advances, questions remain: how can we ensure that these initiatives benefit all students, regardless of their disciplines or social backgrounds? Among the many insightful moments that I had at the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University 's Young Talents Programme, one that particularly stood out was Mr. Oscar Mbeche 's emphasis on the word "conscientious." While not a new term to me, Mr. Mbeche's use of it during the programme prompted me to revisit its meaning. Being conscientious means being diligent, careful, and thorough in one's work or duties. This reflection has led me to embrace conscientiousness as one of my core values. In a world where the rush to achieve can sometimes overshadow the importance of doing things well, I believe that being conscientious is more crucial than ever. It is about taking responsibility, paying attention to details, and consistently striving for excellence. I encourage everyone to uphold this value in their personal and professional lives.
