[GREEN FACT] Fermentation’s role in the future of bioplastics 🌱    #Bioplastics are becoming increasingly prevalent in many applications: textiles, compostable food packaging, medical equipment, etc. Their production capacities have increased over the past year and are set to continue growing. The current 2.2 million tonnes global production capacity for bioplastics is expected to reach 7.5 million tonnes in 2028.      In the bioplastics market, #fermentation has a growing role to play:   ➡️ PLA accounted for 31% of the global bioplastics production capacity in 2022 and is expected to go up to 43.6% in 2028   ➡️ PHA, in a smaller proportion, is following the same dynamic with an expected growth from 4.8% in 2023 to 13.5% of global bioplastics production capacity expected in 2028  Both polymers, produced from the fermentation of biomass, are #biobased and #biodegradable with great mechanical and physical properties making them highly relevant for flexible and rigid packaging applications – amongst others.      Sources: European Biotechnology - Life Science and Industry Magazine (EBM), European Bioplastics & Nova Institute  #GreenFact
