A big thank you to Dennis Hubbs and HEA Law for an exceptional presentation on intellectual property (IP) for SMEs at today's American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) event. Your insights into the importance of early IP protection, the different types of IP—patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets—and the critical role that IP plays as a key business asset (representing 70-80% of a company's value) were invaluable to our members. The practical advice on cost-saving strategies for securing IP rights and navigating international IP laws is what SMEs need to remain competitive in today’s global market. We deeply appreciate your commitment to empowering SMEs in Japan with the tools to protect their innovations and build stronger businesses.

Last week GAR returned to Shanghai, addressing many topical issues ranging from ISDS regarding China and Chinese companies to international arbitration of IP disputes. Our Head of Dispute Resolution, Tuuli Timonen, participated in a panel discussion exploring recent legislative developments and updates aimed at making arbitration more IP-friendly. Additionally, panelists discussed the rise of specialized IP-related dispute centers, including the PRC National IP Administration and CIETAC Intellectual Property Arbitration Centre. The rapid and widespread development and adoption of new technologies have increased the importance of safeguarding IP rights, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. While litigation has traditionally been the primary method to resolve such disputes, clients increasingly consider arbitration an effective alternative. But there is still a path to be paved for arbitration in this field to make it a reckoned competitor to national courts – in particular, when it comes to the existence and validity of IP rights. We sincerely thank the organizers, brilliant panelists, and other participants for sharing their expertise and helping to advance the field of international IP arbitration! #GARLive #dottirlaw

Ever considered licensing your intellectual property rights in Lithuania? Our partner Erikas Saukalas from METIDA offers insights into the process and benefits of IP licensing in the country. “Yes, you can license your intellectual property rights in Lithuania. Licensing allows you to grant permission to others to use your intellectual property while retaining ownership. You can negotiate terms such as duration, territory, and royalties with the licensee. It's advisable to draft a comprehensive licensing agreement outlining the rights and obligations of both parties to ensure clarity and protection of your intellectual property.”

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve successfully completed the General Course on Intellectual Property (DL-101) offered by the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO. This incredible six-week journey began on September 20th and concluded with the final exam on November 3rd, 2024. I delved into diverse topics, including: ✨ Copyright & Related Rights ✨ Trademarks & Geographical Indications (GIs) ✨ Industrial Designs & Patents ✨ Unfair Competition ✨ International registration systems ✨ New plant variety protection ✨ Traditional Knowledge (TK), Traditional Cultural Expressions (TCE), & Genetic Resources (GR) ✨ The impact of technological advancements on IP This experience not only deepened my knowledge but also expanded my appreciation for IP's pivotal role in fostering innovation, cultural heritage protection, and global economic development. I’m grateful for the opportunity to enhance my expertise and look forward to applying this knowledge to my future endeavours in Intellectual Property Law. #IntellectualProperty #WIPO #LifelongLearning #IPRights #ProfessionalGrowth
