Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi has claimed the top position among Indian universities in the 2025 QS Asia University Rankings, moving up two spots to 44th, now ahead of IIT Bombay, which slipped to 48th place. IIT Delhi’s rise is driven by strong research impact, improved academic reputation, and an increased number of PhD-qualified faculty members. Prof. Vivek Buwa, head of IIT-D’s ranking cell, highlighted the institute’s focus on technological innovation, startup culture, and societal problem-solving. The university excelled in research output, averaging seven publications per faculty member, and earned high marks in employment reputation among Asian universities. IIT Delhi’s active international collaborations, with 116 research projects worldwide, further strengthened its ranking. In total, six Indian institutions placed in Asia’s top 100, though others like IIT Madras (56th), IISc Bangalore (62nd), and IIT Kanpur (67th) saw slight declines. #IITDelhi #QSAsiaRankings #IndianUniversities #ResearchImpact #HigherEducation #AcademicExcellence #GlobalCollaboration #TopUniversities

My two cents: Why Private Universities' Research Output Should Be Acknowledged, Not Undermined 1. Research Output Isn’t Inflated—It’s Diversified: Publications from private universities have surged because these institutions are focusing on diverse and emerging fields. They are prioritizing interdisciplinary research in areas like AI, data science, and biotechnology. 2. Faculty Quality is Real: It’s not about being “10 times better” but about building ecosystems that are more responsive and flexible. Faculty at private universities often come with industry experience and international exposure, which are critical in today’s interconnected research world. These faculties are bringing in international collaborations and projects, something premier institutes sometimes struggle with due to bureaucracy and rigidity. 3. NIRF Metrics Reflect Genuine Progress: The improvements in research scores for private universities in the NIRF rankings are not the result of “gaming the system” but of strategic investment in research infrastructure, partnerships, and incentivization of research publications. These efforts are aligned with global best practices, which reward both quantity and quality in research output. 4. Publication Data is Objective, Not Subjective: The Scopus-indexed publications and citation data referenced by NIRF are globally recognized metrics of research quality. If private universities are leading in these metrics, it is a sign that their research is being cited and used by other scholars internationally. It’s dangerous to dismiss these accomplishments as “gaming,” particularly when institutions like IITs and IISc are free to participate on the same playing field (the ‘premier’ institutes receive huge government funding, they normally get top-notch UG students, and hence are better placed than the private institutes in terms of the research acumen that they ‘could have’ utilized!) 5. Premier Institutes Must Adapt, Not Blame: Rather than attacking private universities, premier institutes should focus on adapting. If these "premier" institutes are falling behind in research rankings, it’s a wake-up call for them to reassess their strategies. Reliance on legacy reputation alone won’t be enough in a competitive academic environment where private universities are more agile, globally connected, and outcome-driven. Private universities are contributing to India’s scientific landscape with innovation, interdisciplinary research, and global collaborations. Instead of seeing them as threats, premier institutes should see this as an opportunity to STEP-UP (or step-down, if you will!) and COLLABORATE, driving India’s scientific reputation forward.
Are researchers in Private Universities 10 times better than those in IITs and IISc. This article in The Hindu shows that at least in publication statistics, many private universities are handsomely beating premium Indian Institutes. I know many of the people working in private institutes are going to jump in and say that these private universities have better faculty that the premier institutes. Even IF that's the case are they really 10 times better? Or are research metrics being gamed by these universities? Analysis of NIRF 2024 rankings clearly show that private universities have hugely increased their scores in the research parameters. It's high time that NIRF and the authorities revise their parameters and rankings. Otherwise these private universities will game their way to the top and cause immense harm to India's scientific reputation on the way if they haven't already. Honest researchers need to speak up. They are the real victims of this race. University Grants Commission (UGC) MAMIDALA JAGADESH KUMAR MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA Dharmendra Pradhan #NIRF2024 #NIRF #NIRFRankings

Is this what the educational society has to preach and teach? Where's the ideology of appreciation and acceptance? The sportsmanship behaviour?? A single loss can de-ground people like this? When NIRF stated a particular xxx University to be at the top for 6 consecutive times that was acceptable but when the same NIRF had other scalings it has been the matter of dispute and grumblings !! So should the scaling go accordingly with people's idea? Scams are everywhere and cannot be plotted to a particular estate. Quality papers are not only from premier institutes, it's scattered. So does this also make a bias now on educational grounds? Students from non prestigious institution will not be graded good in future? Is the brand a mark of goodness and being worthy? Achal Agrawal, PhD With due respect sir, my intention is only to state that pls don't plate everyone on the same platter. Change is occurring and corruption is everywhere. Let's bring an environment where the paper selection unit does the grading better. In the NIRF rankings I have my own disputes too but is it so easy to question the premier institutes so easily like here? Loop holes exists everywhere let it be any institute. Equality is essential. Are Educational Institutions Prioritizing Business Over Excellence? While educational institutions often promote themselves as centers of excellence, the world faces pressing issues like hunger, malnutrition, and climate crises. In 2023, we are witnessing record ice melts, catastrophic floods, extreme heat waves in the U.S. and Europe, and severe droughts in Africa, exacerbated by the ongoing wars. The conflicts have driven up energy prices and strained global food systems, with nearly 3.1 billion people unable to afford a healthy diet in 2020—a stark increase due to the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. In India, the government has provided free food to 814 million people since March 2020 to combat hunger, highlighting the urgent need for change. Given these challenges, we must question the effectiveness of our education systems. They currently exhibit several shortcomings: Neglect of Holistic Education: There is an overemphasis on rote learning and academic subjects, with insufficient focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and empathy. Insufficient Education on Sustainability: A lack of emphasis on sustainability and climate change education has hindered progress towards achieving the SDG2030 goals. Limited Global Citizenship Focus: Education systems often fail to cultivate a sense of global responsibility, as seen in practices like the burning of rice straw by Indian farmers, which harms the environment. Inequities in Access: Many regions face disparities in educational quality and access, influenced by socio-economic factors and reservation systems. Ensuring inclusivity and equitable standards is crucial for addressing global challenges. The prioritization of business interests over educational excellence has contributed to these issues, necessitating immediate corrective action. World Development Foundation has innovated a unique solution.

V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, discusses the NIRF Rankings 2024, where the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT M) has continued its dominance. IIT Madras retained its position as the number one institution in the country in both the overall and engineering categories. This marks the eighth consecutive year that IIT Madras has secured the top spot in engineering. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have once again dominated the top 10 rankings in the overall category. Following IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, secured the second position. The third, fourth, and fifth spots were taken by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Kanpur, respectively. IIT Kharagpur ranked sixth, while AIIMS Delhi took the seventh position. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati occupied the eighth and ninth spots, with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, completing the top ten. The consistent performance of IIT Madras and other IITs highlights their commitment to excellence in education and research, setting a high standard for institutions across the country. Let's talk about research. Govt or Pvt How much actual research is going on? 1.Investigation reveals serious scientific misconduct by IIT Dhanbad faculty https://lnkd.in/dhic58pA 2. Alarming rise of scientific misconduct recorded in India | Data https://lnkd.in/dPnWwDQK It's just a game of numbers of publications and citations; how they do, we all know copy paste results manipulation; to be honest, there is no actual impactful research. What is the outcome of the education? Let me tell you that as of June 2024, India's unemployment rate stands at 9.2%, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). My simple question is: if a middle-class person goes to an institute by taking an education loan, and after that he is unemployed, unable to pay EMI, dealing with huge pressure, then what's the meaning of a degree? What is the meaning of the NIRF ranking of Pvt. or Govt. Education? It's just a money making process in the name of education selling point less degrees. #education #research
