Molding is used to add visual interest, depth, and elegance to interior and exterior spaces. Both spellings, "moulding" and "molding," are correct, and the usage depends on regional preferences. Aquatic Center 2028 The approved commission concept for a aquatic center is a modernist design with a focus on durability and aesthetic appeal. The walls are constructed from concrete, giving them an industrial esthetic that contrasts elegantly with the blue windows. The windows are etched abstractions of blue coral patterns, adding a layer of organic texture that softens the concrete’s rigidity. Behind the concrete walls lies an iron inner skeleton, providing structural stability and reinforcing the center’s durability. The patterning of the windows varies across sections, with some having large rectangular panes, others incorporating smaller, repeating blocks. This variation enhances the visual rhythm of the facade. ~MLL

The way we finish buildings on the exterior is essential for not only practical reasons (to keep buildings dry) but also for aesthetics. In this house in Stamford, Lincolnshire, we used treated timber cladding. The aim of the design was to create a 'floating' pod that doesn't conform to the existing building's form and alignment. The cedar wood has been used as full lengths (from top to bottom) as well as the window reveal linings. When you have a simple facade like this, details are essential – screws, equally spaced and aligned, keep the cladding in position but don't over-dominate. These are two section of a warehouse adapted reuse project that we (LD2) are developing in Philadelphia, PA - USA. The design will have exterior walls clad in reclaimed wood with custom designed decorative iron work panels with an intricate, abstract pattern, evoking organic forms in rich shades of brown and black. This refined motif introduces depth and elegance, making the facade a sculptural centerpiece. Horizontal bands of lush greenery, part of a living wall installation, frame the wooden panel, creating a dynamic interplay between natural textures and crafted materials. The verdant elements soften the geometric precision of the design, offering both visual contrast and a nod to biophilic design principles. Large windows punctuate the facade, enhancing its functionality by inviting natural light into the interior while honoring the industrial lines that balance the organic warmth of the wood. These elements together form a harmonious architectural statement, merging art, nature, and utility to reflect sustainable luxury and contemporary innovation. ~MLL

#Brick #vaulted #ceilings, like the one in this photo, are a hallmark of traditional Tuscan #architecture. This construction technique involves creating a curved structure, often barrel or cross-vaulted, by arranging bricks in an interlocking pattern. These ceilings offer exceptional structural strength, using compression to evenly distribute weight along the curve. Builders use wooden forms (centine) to support the bricks during installation. The bricks are arranged in an arch, with a keystone placed in the center to stabilize the structure. Once the support is removed, the vault can bear weight on its own, showcasing a unique aesthetic and durability that can last centuries. Colours used in buildings once were mostly of the natural material surfaces or as applied on it. On exterior face the colour distinguishes a building among many other nearly similar ones. It also emphasizes the architectural elements. In early ages of a street without intensive night lighting, the colour of the building allowed it to be perceptible. Sides of the openings with lighter tones helped the night interior light to have a wider glow. The choices for exterior colours were fewer then on the interior sides.
