Orthopaedic Surgeon | Hip and Knee | MBBS FRACS FAORTHA | Focused on Minimally Invasive Surgery, Innovation and Technology to improve patient experience and outcomes.

As a surgeon in private practice I regularly see uninsured patients who're in severe pain and don't want to wait 3+ YEARS on the public hospital waiting list. Not just that - they want have a choice of surgeon, and not be operated on by trainees or have to share a public hospital ward room. Historically I've been reluctant offer "self funding " surgery to these patients out fear that they could be financially exposed if they were unlucky to develop a complication. Thankfully, Healthe Care and Mulgrave Private Hospital now offer a "SelfPaySurgery" programme where costs are transparent and where the patients are assured that any complications (for a finite period of time) will be covered by the hospital at no extra cost to the patient. This makes self funding surgery a very viable, attractive and interesting option for many patients. If interested to explore this please contact my office during business hours, Fax to (03) 9682 0203 or send me a comment or question here. I'm curious if my colleagues internationally have similarly progressive offerings where uninsured patients are offered fixed fee surgery and any complications are absorbed by the hospital? #hipreplacement #kneereplacement #hip #knee #noinsurance #arthritis

This is happening everywhere….Lisa Fagan, MSN, MBA Smith Direct Specialty Care Transparent pricing. Self funded patients and employers. Cut out the huge financial burden of the greedy corporations in the middle and connect patients with providers and everyone wins.

this is really interesting to see - for a long time, as a GP, I have strongly discouraged patients from self funding their procedures, out of concern they were entering a private hospital with a "blank check" on the table. (I would always encourage them to have appropriate private cover rather than taking the risk that they would have to self fund) knowing that complications are covered significantly changes the game! 1 qn - if they reach their "finite period" and still require further inpatient care, do they have the option of transferring to a public hospital for further care rather than having to pay further out of pocket costs?

Maybe we should be encouraging patients to do this seeing as many of the medical insurers now are increasing premiums so they can ramp up their profits and corporate bonuses and are doing surgeons, company reps and hospitals dirty.

Call me shocked the government payed program has an extremely long waiting time..

What a great, patient (who is the client in this case) innovation.
