💙There are ships that have entered into legend, and others that, despite having written a beautiful page of history, have remained in the oblivion of time. Today, I want to tell you about the piroscáfo Francesco I, which was the marvel of the first 19th century, due to its beauty and innovative navigation techniques, but not only that... 🥇On 16 April 1833, the first ever cruise took place aboard the luxurious steamship Francesco I, a marvel built in the Castellammare di Stabia shipyards and flying the flag of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.🇧🇱 The ship set sail from Naples and called at several Mediterranean ports: Catania, Malta, Corfu, Athens, etc., before landing in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). The fun was not limited solely to on board; it was also guaranteed by guided tours of art, history, and culture. 🏛️ 📰 A large advertising campaign was launched to spread the word, and the maiden voyage was announced throughout Europe. 👑In addition to King Ferdinand II and the Queen, numerous nobles and princes 🎩💍 of the time embarked on the Francesco I, including English, French, Russian, Spanish, Prussian, Bavarian, etc., for a total of 43 passengers (unfortunately, I have not found any data about crew on board). 🧭The ship returned to Naples on 9th August, after a 112-day cruise, during which, according to the writer Francesco Li Volti: "there was no room for boredom,' given the trips organized to the prestigious locations chosen for mooring, and the parties, dances, and games that entertained the illustrious guests on board the ship during the crossing".💃🍸♟️🥂🎻 🛳️ The voyage was never repeated, but it inaugurated a new type of tourism and sowed the seed that blossomed a century later, that of the cruise industry. Cannes has many treasures. And some of them are just off its coast: the Lérins Islands. The islands of Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat are corners of paradise with their wild, unspoilt landscapes, their coastlines and bays, their pine and eucalyptus trees, their fauna and their tranquillity. If you can reach them by ferry, which makes regular return trips, why not take a boat trip to discover them from the sea? 🛥 There are many different ways to enjoy these two jewels of the Mediterranean. With or without a licence, with or without a skipper, you can hire motorboats, sailboats or electric boats from Cannes and admire the incredible spectacle of the islands. It's the perfect opportunity to anchor in secluded spots and enjoy the turquoise waters in complete tranquillity. There's also the option of a mini-cruise with a private, small group tour of the islands, giving you the chance to enjoy their unique beauty in complete relaxation. How would you like to visit the Lérins Islands?

Reflections on British Isles trip ~ I must admit to having been somewhat surprised, and unsure, about doing the British Isles cultural trip when Abercrombie & Kent invited me to join them. Certainly stepping out of one's comfort zone becomes more difficult with age, and I was unsure as to what lectures I would present onboard, should I accept? Cultural trips are vastly different from Expedition cruises, with various cultural activities offered daily, often in areas one can only easily access by ship. For me personally, it has been absolutely fantastic. Invigorating, enlightening and thought-provoking. Learning about British culture in a completely different time-frame to my battlefield history, and/or Polar Exploration. Rather like researchers on Orcas, the more we learn, the less we know. When one considers underground villages like Skara Brae dating back 5000 years, Brodgar Stone Circle at 4500 years old, and abbeys originating in 563AD, fact and fiction need to be very carefully evaluated. The history has been totally enthralling. Interesting that the word thrall relates to Viking slaves, and now enthralling means captivating in a literal sense, rather than a physical one. Travelling around the British Isles, from Edinburgh westwards to Dover (for London) provides opportunity for Orkney, Hebrides, Staffa and Iona, various stops in Ireland, Plymouth and Dover. The ship is a glorious floating hotel, creating a gracious, sophisticated experience on many levels. The number of guests on this voyage, and the following one along the coast of France, Spain and Portugal attests to the appeal of these cruises. Imminently easier to get to than the Arctic or the Antarctic, too! #engagingstorytelling #inshorts

Did YOU Know? Ever wondered why cruise ships don't have a 13th floor? It's a superstition rooted in maritime tradition! Many cruise ships skip from deck 12 to deck 14, avoiding the number 13 due to its unlucky reputation across various cultures. Similarly, Italian cruise lines often skip a 17th floor, as the number 17 is believed to bring bad luck in Italian culture. Next time you're aboard a luxurious cruise liner, take note of the deck numbers and discover the fascinating superstitions that shape maritime culture. Or do you take the stairs instead?
