From the Cab, Carolinas Association for Passenger Trains May 2024 newsletter (shared with permission) Martin Wheeler, President Don Yehle, Editor What If NC Received Additional Funding for Its Corridor Studies? TRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE AND ACCELERATION ACT: S 821 Senate Bill S 821, currently in the NC Senate's Rules Committee, aims to provide additional funding on top of the $500,000 per corridor already allotted through the FRA's Corridor ID Program. No local match is required. This legislation seeks to increase funding for FRA Corridor ID projects on 7 corridors in North Carolina. If passed, each corridor, including Wilmington to Raleigh, would receive an extra one million dollars. Those interested in showing support should reach out to the Governor, State Representatives, and Senators, especially members of Transportation Committees. It would also be appropriate to seek support from City Councils, County Commissions, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Rural Planning Organizations, and Chambers of Commerce. The seven proposed rail corridors are: - Charlotte to Washington, D.C. - Charlotte to Atlanta, GA - Charlotte to Kings Mountain - Winston Salem to Raleigh - Fayetteville to Raleigh - Wilmington to Raleigh - Asheville to Salisbury https://lnkd.in/gXyk8sQG

Attention High-Speed Rail Enthusiasts: The next Finance & Audit (8:30 am) and Board of Directors (9:30 am) take place on Thursday, November 7th, at the Department of Food and Agriculture in downtown Sacramento. Get your public comments ready. I typically type up the script of my draft public comment (200 to 275 words) a week before the meeting, then review and edit as needed daily. Just before the meetings, I toss the script, so I can see the facial expressions of the Board and Finance & Audit Committee members. Memorization is not important. What’s important is knowing your talking points and speaking from the heart. See you next Thursday at the Department of Food and Agriculture. For agendas, go to www.HSR.ca.gov. I plan to talk about an upcoming conference and my book: “High-Speed Trains: Bringing People Together”.

On the eve of a key national election, we wrap up our series looking at the status of #highspeedrail in the U.S. today. Money and politics can be the biggest challenges to building these high-tech, high-cost projects. But there's no clear distinction among political parties in their support of HSR, my reporting for Smart Cities Dive found. Brightline West Trains leader Wes Edens told me that support for his Las Vegas-Southern California project "has been remarkably bipartisan." And support among voters on both sides of the aisle is high. What do you think? Will 200-mph trains someday become commonplace in America as they are in China, Japan and Europe?

A new community update shares the latest news on the City’s rail grade separation discussions underway, including meetings set, ways to share input and next steps. The City is holding community conversations around solutions to increased traffic as Caltrain electrifies and more trains run through the Palo Alto corridor, and what we can do to keep everyone moving and safe. These discussions are informing upcoming decisions on alternatives for grade separation — making roads crossing the railroad lines pass over or under the tracks — to improve traffic circulation and increase public safety. There are seven streets where people and vehicles can cross the railroad tracks in Palo Alto. While three of these intersections — also known as grade crossings — are above the road and already grade separated, there are four remaining that cross the tracks at the same level, posing traffic and safety issues. U.S. Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Roseville) announced plans to introduce a bill eliminating federal funding for California's High-Speed Rail project, citing political failures and unjustifiable costs to taxpayers. The rail, designed to connect cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco, has faced criticism over its funding challenges and projected price tag of tens of billions. https://lnkd.in/gRKFACTh #CaliforniaRail #HighSpeedRail #TaxpayerFunding #Infrastructure
