#BurkinaFaso: Islamist armed groups terrorize civilians Islamist armed groups in Burkina Faso have escalated their attacks on civilians, massacring villagers, displaced people, and Christian worshipers, according to Human Rights Watch. ACLED data shows over 26,000 people have been killed during the conflict since 2016, with more than 6,000 deaths since January 2024 alone. Between January and August 2024, Islamist armed groups killed 1,004 civilians in 259 attacks, a slight decrease from 2023. The JNIM, responsible for the August 24 attack in Barsalogho, operates in 11 out of Burkina Faso’s 13 regions, while the ISGS is mainly active in the Sahel region. Finding joy in times of challenges is an important practice.
Amidst all the turmoil and crises facing the world these days, it’s important to highlight the moments that lift our spirits. This weekend, I was touched by the joy and the spontaneous celebrations of millions of Syrians around the world upon hearing that Bashar al-Assad had resigned as Syria’s ruler and unceremoniously fled his country to Moscow. After more than 50 years of iron-fisted rule by the Assad clan, propped up by the dictators in Iran and, more recently, Russia, many Syrians got a taste of freedom for the first time in their lives. This was as uplifting a moment of liberation as any we have seen in the last 40 years. Of course, ending Assad’s brutal rule is one thing. Keeping the peace and rebuilding a nation so fragmented and battered is another matter altogether. Here's my thoughts on Syria: https://virg.in/41x4ZyK

Exclusive TCB Expert Analysis on #Syria out today. BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT — In the week since Syrian rebels captured the capital, Damascus, ending the half-century rule of the Assad family in stunningly rapid fashion, there has been a mix of post-rebellion chaos and signs of an orderly transition. On the one hand, leaders of the rebellion have met with former government officials and chosen a transitional leader. They have tried to ensure that basic services, in particular banking and local police, are continued. Some of the most notorious prisons where the former regime kept its political enemies have been emptied, and Syrians across the country and around the world have rejoiced over a revolution that one month ago would have seemed unthinkable. But along with the euphoria have come grave concerns about Syria’s next chapter — the potential for clashes among rival factions, the possibility that terrorist groups will find safe haven in a power vacuum, and the potential for conflict among other nations vying for influence in the post-Assad era. Cipher Brief experts have weighed in to help us understand the moment, and the challenges it brings, for Syria and the broader Middle East. One week after rebels took the capital, a half dozen members of our expert network assess what some call “a great opportunity,“ others “a dangerous point,” and the myriad geopolitical ripple effects of the rebellion that may be felt for a long time.

Mosab Hassan Yousef @MossabHassanYosef Useful information for the new generation of pro “Palestine” among Americans. This is what you need to know in case of a possible large scale war between Israel and Hizbullah. -Hizbullah started the war against Israel on Oct 8, 2024 for no reason other than Jihad. -Beirut is not in Gaza and it is not occupied by Israel. -Hizbullah are not “Palestinians” -Beirut is not an open air prison. -Hizbullah will use Lebanese civilians as human shields and will try to maximize civilian casualties on both sides. -Hizbulah hates Americans more than they hate “Palestinians”. -Hizbullah helped the Syrian dictator in killing 500,000+ Arab civilians. -Israel is fighting on behalf of Arabs and Jews, Hizb-Allah is fighting on behalf of Allah. No offense… Americans who hate Israel, suffer from self hatred.

Perhaps the very first areas that Israel might take as a protective corridor, if needed, would be Christian ones. I believe there are (or were) some Christian and Sunni areas just across Israel's northern border; if so, they might represent a good move. But also, a Jew from Israel by the name of Jesus once went up the coast a bit to Tyre. Perhaps the IDF could follow a similar route, such as the Sea Road, and take Tyre as well. Consider the likely naval superiority that Israel probably enjoys, which might facilitate holding these areas (as it did for Conrad of Montferrat in 1188), while at the same time giving Hezbollah and anyone else opposed something to charge. Alternatively, or in addition, a U.S. military base in Tyre as a guarantor of a weapons-free peace in southern Lebanon might help as part of a settlement of the war against Israel initiated by Hezbollah. Even a joint base there with U.S., Israeli, and Lebanese troops to keep southern Lebanon clean from Hezbollah might be a better suggestion than a 21-day "ceasefire". If a U.S. led base also helps Lebanese Christians and other minorities as well, then that would be a bonus.
The discrimination and persecution of Lebanese Christians by Hezbollah is intensifying. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is placing missiles near churches to provoke Israeli attacks, endangering lives. He has also ordered schools in Lebanon to accommodate people from the south and has warned his troops will enter Christian homes if they don't comply. (Visegrad 24 on X)

Spoke with BBC News and Helena H. about the fall of the Assad regime in Syria and the future challenges that lie ahead This is a historic moment but big questions remain about what happens next. There are significant risks that external countries and designated groups will pursue their political agendas at the expense of ordinary Syrians all over again. Fortunately I know many smart and talented Syrians who are already working to build a better future for Syria and a system that can better protect all civilians and minorities. Lets all hope it continues in the days, weeks, and months ahead https://lnkd.in/egQ5FvPM

301 days ago, Hamas-ISIS, along with a mob backed by the Islamic regime in Iran, infiltrated Israel. They killed 1,200 people in one day, looted, raped, and kidnapped over 255 people. 115 people are still being held hostage. Ariel (4) is one of them. We want him back. Hamas is losing. Palestinians who support them are losing. It’s time to let them go. #LetThemGoNow

Israel has dropped almost 75,000 bombs and shells on Gaza in 200 days, twenty times more than the US aimed at Iraq in six years of war. It’s not war. It’s genocide.
