ILO Global Business and Disability Network reposted this
Today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I am so proud to announce the publication of Disability Inclusion @ Work 2024: A Global Outlook – providing a unique data driven global insight into the workplace experiences of people with disabilities, chronic health conditions and those who are neurodivergent #DisabilityAtWork24 #IDPD #DisabilityDay
So important to learn what more needs to be done in this space.
Don’t really know why it’s “people with disabilities”, we’re “disabled people” ❤️
Thank you for your leadership Emma Codd! So great to have Deloitte in the ILO Global Business and Disability Network!
Such exciting work - looking forward to digging into the report!
Thank you.
This headline feels a bit selective. "Six in 10 employees with disabilities, chronic health conditions or neurodivergence…" is like saying, "100% of people in wheelchairs go to work in wheelchairs." It doesn’t really add much clarity. Maybe a better headline would be: "98% of statistics are written by people who never passed GCSE maths…" (OK, joking here!). But why does this matter? As a structural engineer, I see huge amounts of money spent on ramps and lifts in buildings where they simply don’t fit. Even when it's at the expense of fire safety (e.g, fire stairs being removed to accomodate a lift). While accessibility is important—and I absolutely support accommodating everyone—we also need to think about balance. For instance, consider back pain. Many people suffer from it, yet regulations mean sinks are often too low for average-height people, forcing them to stoop, which isn’t great for back health. Misdirected stats don’t help us strike the right balance.
