Container ship named after Oman makes maiden call MUSCAT: A container ship named after the Sultanate of Oman docked at the container terminal facilities of Hutchison Ports Sohar on its maiden visit to Oman last week. MV ESL Oman – part of the fleet of UAE-based liner shipping company ESL – called at Hutchison Ports Sohar as part of the CMX (Cosmos) service connecting the Port of Sohar with major ports in China, Singapore, UAE and Malaysia. Hutchison Ports Sohar CEO Anacin Kum joined senior port executives and shipping agency representatives in a quayside ceremony to welcome the ship’s Master on the first-ever call by the cargo vessel proudly bearing the legend ‘Oman’ on its exterior. With the Red Sea blockade likely to continue, adding time-consuming and costly woes to the route around the Cape of Good Hope, the Port of Salalah has stepped up to lift standards of proactivity for shipping lines and beneficial cargo owners. The new sea-road-sea route offers comparable or even faster times than the traditional Asia - US East Coast and Europe routes. An alternative Sea-Air route is cost effective for more time sensitive cargo. The Omani port, which is ideally located on the main ocean routes connecting South and East Asia with Europe, North Africa and the Americas, and the upper Gulf with East Africa, is offering an attractive, new, multimodal alternative. Salalah Port to join global vessel-sharing network MUSCAT: Port of Salalah – a major Omani logistics hub overlooking the Indian Ocean - is banking on the launch of the Gemini Network, a global vessel-sharing agreement between shipping giants Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, to offset a downtrend in container throughput recorded at the Omani port over the past year. That decline is largely attributable to disruptions in maritime shipping in the Red Sea linked to the ongoing Gaza War. Container volumes slumped 13 per cent to 2.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) during the first nine months of 2024, down from 2.9 million TEUs a year earlier.
