Despite the wettest 18 months since 1836, increasing fertiliser and energy costs; the UK Food Security Index 2024 (published last month) reported that in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, confidence in food supply chain actors to ensure food is safe to eat varied by actor. War Using Spices! Kusha Spices Fun Fact Series #2 We’ve waxed eloquent enough about the historical #spice wars over the centuries, but we haven’t touched on this spicier, wilder twist – a real war with spices! Intrigued? Well, get ready because the #MaraTribeofAfrica is waging an all-out spice war—against #elephants! That’s right! This isn’t your usual territorial skirmish; it’s a full-on battle between man and beast, and the weapon of choice? #Chillies. The elephants may be large, but their sensitive trunks can’t handle the heat. Their super-stuffy noses are no match for the spicy sting of red chillies. Wild elephants love to wander into farmland for a free meal, trampling and destroying crops in the process. But then the #localcommunities got smart. They figured out that elephants can’t stand the fiery fumes of #chillipeppers. So, they’ve been whipping up some homemade chilli water, soaking twine in it, and draping these ropes around their crops. Voilà—makeshift chili fences! It’s a spicy force field to keep the pachyderm pests out! It worked, for some time. But the elephants? They’re not giving up that easily. Some of them have gotten sneaky, showing off their problem-solving skills. They’ve been spotted knocking down the chilli fences with branches or even backing into them like they’re moonwalking into a Michael Jackson music video. Yes, these elephants are craftier than you’d think. The spicy standoff has escalated so much that even the #GovernmentofKenya has gotten involved. It’s become a national concern! Local groups, like the Mara Elephant Project (#MEP), are working with the farmers to come up with even more creative deterrents—chilli bombs, dung-and-chilli briquettes? It’s a spicy arms’ race out there in the #Africanwilderness! So, will the chilli fences prevail, or will the elephants come out on top in this epic chili-fueled #showdown? Only time will tell. During the Seven Years War of the mid-1700s, a French army pharmacist named Antoine-Augustin Parmentier was captured by Prussian soldiers. As a prisoner of war, he was forced to live on rations of potatoes. In mid-18th century France, this would practically qualify as cruel and unusual punishment: potatoes were thought of as feed for livestock, and they were believed to cause leprosy in humans. A New #KinderCharacterChallenge starts today: Sneak Zucchini onto your Neighbor's Porch August 8, was ‘National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day,’ but we will celebrate it much longer. Zucchini can grow so prolifically that it is necessary to share so that it doesn’t go to waste. If you leave them on the vine too long, they continue to grow to what our family refers to as Zuke-a-melons! Not everyone grows zucchini, so if you are not one of those souls, perhaps you can share other produce you may have. You can also pick something up from a farmer’s market and share it with a neighbor. Or maybe you can do like I do and share Zucchini Bread. It isn't necessary to ‘sneak’ as it could become a feast for local wildlife (Raccoons - I’m lookin’ at you!) According to the website National Today, the day was started by Thomas Roy. “It’s believed that zucchinis never really made their way across to the United States until the 1920s, and were brought across by Italians and then cultivated in California.” Thankfully, Zucchini can be used in breakfast omelets, salads, as a vegetable with a meal, and it can be hidden in a multitude of baked goods, rendering them ‘healthy.’ #Kindness #RAK #KindnessMatters #CharacterStartsWithMe

The eggs in my fridge are covered in poop. There's a reason, I promise, keep reading... 👇 At first, not washing my chicken eggs until I was ready to eat them didn't sound so bad. Then I realized just how much poop is actually on farm fresh eggs... And the idea of just sliding them in next to last night's leftovers felt really gross. But, here's the deal... Unwashed eggs have a protective layer called a cuticle (aka "the bloom") that keeps them fresh for weeks WITHOUT refrigeration. When we wash our eggs, we remove that layer and the eggs have to be refrigerated immediately. Washed eggs can last ~2 months in the fridge. Unwashed eggs can last 2-3 weeks on the counter and an additional 3-4 months in the fridge. By keeping our eggs unwashed, we're doubling their shelf life, which means we're doing a better job using all of the food our farm produces. And nothing about that feels poopy.
