Australian students are more interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) than ever, but for many, that interest doesn’t lead to opportunity. Without real role models or mentors, and without the right resources, too many of them can’t see how these skills could translate into a career. Even with the government’s target of 650,000 STEM jobs by 2030, young people can’t reach what they can’t see. Programs like Amazon’s STEM initiative bring hands-on, real-world activities into the classroom, helping students connect what they learn with what they might one day do. For many, that experience alone could make all the difference. Read more about the program here: https://lnkd.in/gtbkk_Ju The future isn’t just built by creating jobs—it’s built by giving young people practical support, opening doors for teachers, and sharing real pathways forward. STEM-ming the gap between your future with Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM)! It’s been 6 months since I, Zaynah Alam and Ishraq Chowdhury created Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM) to help young people purse their STEM goals. Let’s take a look at what we’ve achieved so far: Growth: Since launch, Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM) is now a community of 340+ and counting! With members from all over the country, we continue to expand our reach and our impact. Mentoring: With over 50 members currently being mentored, our mentoring programmes have equipped students with the knowledge to break into their aspiring careers. As apprenticeship season kicks off and students begin writing their personal statements, we at Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM) will continue to give them our support. Events: Following the success of our online Hackathon, we hope to continue hosting even greater events, offering our members more opportunities to grow and learn. STEMsphere Newsletter: Written by our members to help build their research and soft skills, STEMsphere is your monthly newsletter for the latest STEM-related topics and work experience opportunities! Having now written this all down, seeing firsthand how far our community has come - whether it’s offering a space for our members to connect or providing them with the resources to develop themselves - reminds me why we started Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM) . Being able to help those in unfavourable situations by providing them the support and resources they need is what drives Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM), and it is what we will continue to do. If you’re interested in collaborating or working with our network, feel free to contact us at apsteminfo@gmail.com or reach out to Aspiring Professionals in STEM (APSTEM) directly. Exposure gaps are leaving many students unsure about their future careers. Across the nation, students are facing challenges in mapping out their paths after high school due to a significant lack of career guidance and exposure. This gap not only makes it tough for them to envision promising opportunities but also contributes to the growing skills gap in vital industries. Many K-12 students are not introduced to a wide range of career options or resources, which can hinder their ability to plan effectively for their futures. According to the 2024 State of the Future U.S. Workforce Report by YouScience, students possess the natural talents needed for in-demand fields like healthcare, technology, and finance, yet they often miss out on these opportunities due to insufficient exposure. The exposure gap is especially pronounced in STEM fields and impacts underrepresented groups, including girls and minorities. The 2024 Female Students and STEM Report shows that women make up only 34 percent of the STEM workforce, with significant exposure gaps starting in middle school and continuing through high school. Surprisingly, a survey by ASA and Jobs for the Future found that nearly 90 percent of parents wish to have more information on non-degree pathways for their children. Many believe schools should start advising students as early as middle school. However, both parents and educators often lack sufficient information about the available education-to-career pathways. Fortunately, there are online resources available to bridge this gap. Tools like Discovery Education’s Career Connect, A Day in the Life digital archive, and Forage’s job simulations provide valuable opportunities for students to explore various careers and develop relevant skills. These resources aim to give students the necessary information and exposure to make informed decisions about their futures. As our workforce evolves, the need for career-connected learning becomes even more critical. Educators and policymakers must focus on providing equitable access to career information and resources, ensuring that every student can confidently pursue pathways that align with their strengths and interests. How can our education system adapt to better prepare students for the dynamic demands of tomorrow’s job market?
