Great Rolling Stone article that explores Tesla’s Full Self Driving (FSD) software and how it relies on “Tesla Vision” to navigate. The camera based system is not fully autonomous as operators are told to keep hands on the wheel at all times. In contrast, Waymo and other driverless robotaxi vehicles use LiDAR to operate. This system is based on radio waves and laser which results in bulky external sensors being mounted on the vehicle. Reportedly, this system is more sensitive and able to detect objects, like pedestrians, with more ease or predictability. It may may be a watered down analysis but it is interesting.
