The M&A market in the Middle East is v. dynamic, largely driven by the ambitious strategies of sovereign wealth funds from GCC which are shifting from hydrocarbons to high-growth sectors. This long-term shift is part of a broader regional vision to build a sustainable economy that are less resilient to oil. In recent years, we have also seen a significant increase in activity from family offices, PEs and International corporates. The region has become a growing market for M&A advisory, ECM through the recent push for IPOs. Looking ahead, the Middle East M&A market stands resilient, investor confidence remains strong, backed by solid economic fundamentals, strategic government initiatives, and long-term visions.

Sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) from the Middle East are keen to join Europe’s largest corporates and private equity funds in the top league of dealmakers in the continent, as well as qualifying for the global super-league. A recent example of a deal came in Spain earlier this month. Mubadala Investment Company of the UAE paid USD 150m (EUR 138m) for a 49% interest in Tubacex’s Oil and Gas Tubular Solutions business. European deals involving SWFs from the Middle East have been tracking up over the past decade, with the pre-pandemic year of 2019 representing a high-water mark of EUR 12bn over ten deals, according to Mergermarket data.
