Happy St. Patrick's Day ☘️ My maiden name is O'Malley, a very Irish name. This might surprise you...our family has ties to pirates. So, of course, St. Patrick's Day is a big deal for my family. One of my favorite books, "Grania," is a novel about real-life Irish chieftain Grace O'Malley, a sixteenth-century heroine whose spirit and passion are the spirit and passion of Ireland. Grania (Gaelic for Grace) is no ordinary female. She becomes her clan's unofficial head and breadwinner and learns to love a man. At the same time, she enters a lifelong struggle against the English forces of Queen Elizabeth -- her nemesis. Elizabeth intends to destroy Grania's piracy and shipping empire--and to subjugate Ireland once and for all. But Grania and her lieutenant fight back. The story of her life is the story of Ireland's fight for solidarity and survival--but it's also the story of Grania's growing ability to love and be strong at the same time. We all must choose what we stand for, to have the courage to be strong and fight for what we want. At the same time, we need to realize that a life without love is pointless. it is nice to see the warm and happy reception for the King and Queen in Australia. I am pleased that I “called” this several days ahead of their arrival, in my article. When I saw all the vicious sneers in the lead up, I knew I had to set a more positive tone for the national visit. It was particularly ungracious that so-called “important” people boasted about rejecting their invitations to meet the King and Queen, when so many ordinary Australians would love an opportunity to meet the monarchs. I am always baffled by the anti-joy characteristics of public intellectuals and commentators in Australia. These people like to sneer at everything. They jeer at happy occasions. They mock sad occasions. They do not like national days of any description even though Australians of all backgrounds and beliefs participate in them. They do not even like etiquette, and all the little acts of courtesy that make daily life go smoothly and promote goodwill between people. What does it matter to you if other people take joy or meaning in important public events and occasions - or even a Taylor Swift concert? Just because you are highly educated and have a platform doesn’t mean you should make crude digs at your fellow citizens! In fact your responsibilities to others are all the more important. Many intelligent people express their views respectfully. One does not cancel out the other. I do not understand this phenomenon and probably never will. Ultimately, we can all criticise and debate concepts without dampening people’s spirits.
