Small cruise ships are ripe for going battery and wind powered and dispensing fuel usage altogether. Their slow sailing speeds and shorter voyages through ecologically sensitive areas make them suitable to embark on this change. And Hurtigruten has done just that with their SeaZero project. "The ship concept was developed in the Norwegian city of Ålesund by VARD, one of Hurtigruten’s key partners in the Sea Zero project, and integrates several innovative solutions created in collaboration with partners from the Norwegian maritime industry. Sea Zero is one of several projects from Hurtigruten that focuses on sustainable travel and industry solutions. " Several developments to look out for: 1. Training and upskilling of vessel crew to maintain propulsion batteries, motors and associated equipment. 2. Enhancing of procedures of evacuation in the event of a battery induced fire. 3. Setting up of adequate charging points at ports the vessel is bound to visit. How do you find this concept? Feel free to comment below. #sustainableshipping #decarbonization

Sydney is powering up for cleaner cruise ship visits to our wonderful city. Yesterday, the NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen says in an Australian-first, Sydney is charging up for a cleaner cruise industry, with a $20 million contract awarded to begin the landmark Shore Power project at White Bay Cruise Terminal. Shore Power is wharf-side infrastructure that provides cruise ships with electricity by connecting to a landside charger, which results in fewer emissions as the engine does not have to stay running while docked. This marks a huge step towards reducing cruise ship pollution, ensuring the cruise industry can be more sustainable and continue to thrive in Sydney and NSW. The move puts Sydney on par with other global cities adopting this technology, such as in Europe, where shoreside electricity will be mandatory at all main ports from 2030. The cruise industry, which has made a firm commitment to sustainability here and internationally, worked closely with the Port Authority of New South Wales in developing plans for shore power in Sydney. The number of modern cruise ships with shore power capability has increased so the timing of installing shore power at White Bay has been right on the mark. Data from CLIA | Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shows NSW recorded a total economic impact from cruising worth $2.5 billion with the industry supporting almost 9000 local jobs. #sydney #cruiseindustry #tourism #cruising #shorepower #sustainabilty #cruiseterminal #welovethecruiseindustry #welovesydney

It’s great to see the cruise industry making big moves toward #sustainability! 🌍 The work that AIDA Cruises is doing with ships like AIDAnova, powered by @LNG, is really impressive. And increasing shore power connections from 65 in 2023 to 600 by 2025 is such a positive step for reducing emissions. The fact that they also focus on waste management, sorting into 22 different categories, shows a real commitment to protecting the environment. It’s good to know that companies like Cruise Baltic and AIDA Cruises are leading these efforts for greener cruising. Looking forward to seeing how this continues to make an impact! 🌱 #SustainableCruising #GreenFuture #CruiseIndustry
A SHORE POWER MILESTONE 🔌🌱 Last Friday, Cruise Baltic was invited to join Cruise Denmark - Copenhagen and beyond's yearly ship visit in Copenhagen for politicians from the Danish Parliament and Copenhagen City Council. This time on the majestic ship AIDAnova - the first ship in the world powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas) 🚢 Onboard, we learned about AIDA Cruises' perspectives on the cruise industry and their sustainability efforts. As a cruise region aiming to make cruising more responsible, we were pleased to hear about the high increase in annual shore power connections within the AIDA fleet. In 2023, AIDA made 65 shore power connections, and by the end of 2024, 300 is expected. In 2025, AIDA expects a total of 600 shore power connections 👏 During a tour of the ship, we learned about the LNG-fueled engine and waste management facilities, where waste is sorted into 22 different fractions. We also explored the engine room and saw the shore power plug, where the magic happens. Thank you to Richard Cooke, Svenja Reinartz, and Felix Eichhorn for inviting us to uncover your beautiful ship. #AIDAcruises #AIDAnova #cruisebaltic

ELECTRIC: PortMiami has become the first major cruise port on the US east coast with shore power at five separate berths. The milestone was recognised at a ceremony with dignitaries and representatives from cruise lines including Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., MSC Cruises and Virgin Voyages. Some 21 cruise ships are expected to plug in at Miami over the coming year, according to Seatrade Cruise News. Connecting with shoreside electricity allows cruise ships to switch their engines off, reducing emissions by up to 98%. According to Seatrade, the annual emission reduction associated with the connection to shore power at one terminal is estimated equivalent to removing 7,500 cars from the road. Shore power is becoming increasingly important in the greening of the cruise industry. New York City's Brooklyn Cruise Terminal introduced shore power for its single cruise berth in 2017. Shore power was also included in the construction of the new Horizon Cruise Terminal at the port of Southampton in the UK, which opened in 2021. #cruise #shorepower #greenenergy #netzero #ports #maritime

World's Largest Sailing Cargo Ship Sets New Standard in Wind-Powered Travel The Anemos, the world’s largest sailing cargo ship, has successfully completed its inaugural transatlantic voyage from Le Havre, France, to Newark, New Jersey. Measuring 265 feet in length, 49 feet in width, and 206 feet in height, the ship carries 1,000 tons of cargo and aims to drive the shipping industry toward more sustainable practices by reducing oil dependence. Equipped with advanced computerized sail adjustments, the Anemos produces just 2 grams of carbon emissions per ton of cargo per kilometer, a significant reduction compared to the over 20 grams emitted by conventional ships. With increasing interest in wind-powered shipping, TOWT plans to build more vessels to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly transport. Currently, about forty large cargo ships use wind power, a small but growing fraction of the global fleet, which contributes roughly three percent of global emissions. https://lnkd.in/gPAUP6cJ #AnemosVoyage #WindPoweredShipping #GreenSailing #SustainableTransport #EcoFriendlyCargo Image Credit: TOWT

As some of you may already know, in the latest edition of Gazelle’s newsletter, Above & Beyond, we proudly announced the name of Gazelle’s 2MW Demonstrator project in Aguçadoura, Portugal: Nau Azul. Just as Gazelle’s demonstrator represents much more than a project, Nau Azul represents much more than a name. The word ‘Nau’, meaning ‘Ship’ or ‘Carrack’ in Portuguese, and pronounced ‘Now’, is Gazelle’s way of paying tribute to the innovative maritime vessels of the past. Developed in the 14th and 15th centuries, Carrack ships were a cornerstone of the Age of Discovery, playing a pivotal role in facilitating global trade and cultural exchange. ‘Nau Azul’ was chosen to reflect the spirit of innovation that these ships represent and their impact on civilisations across the world. The word ‘Azul’, meaning blue in Portuguese, was selected as it directly reflects Gazelle’s commitment to maritime innovation and the Blue Economy. In particular, our dedication to creating economic growth and ensuring environmental health through the sustainable use of ocean resources. With Nau Azul, we plan to pioneer a path towards a cleaner, more resilient energy landscape.
