At the risk of being accused of virtue signaling, I have finally deactivated my XTwitter account. For me, it’s a matter of conscience. And in all good conscience I can no longer use a platform who’s owner is actively destabilising society, to put it politely. I now have the “luxury” of not having to advise clients, in-house comms teams, CEOs, boards and so on as to what they should do. This is a decision, for me, by me. That said, were I to be once again talking to any of the above, at the very least, I would be advising them to review their use of the platform. For me, it’s really straightforward. It’s about association. Whether you’re an international brand, a small charity, or a person of influence; do you want to be aligned with Musk and his MO? Happy with hate? This isn’t an especially new dilemma. Brands have had wobbles with print and online titles for years. But this is different. There are dark forces at work, and they’re not confined to the Tesla Tzar. Perhaps it’s time for all of us, whether as individuals or representing businesses, Government, third sector, to think again about the investment - in time and money - we make in social media. Clearly, the genie is out of the bottle with all these platforms. But I’m convinced more than ever, that as publishers, for that is what they are, they need regulating. Sooner rather than later. I’d be interested in others views on this.

Twitter, is a social media website based in the United States. With over 500 million users, it is one of the world's largest social networks and the fifth-most visited website in the world.[4][5] Users can share text messages, images, and videos as "tweets".[6] X (Twitter) also includes direct messaging, video and audio calling, bookmarks, lists and communities, and Spaces, a social audio feature. In case you missed it... Bluesky is growing with a million users per day and it has some really great features. Bluesky is based on the open-source AT Protocol, it has a free and open API and it's fully programmable! But one of the best features is that you can use your own domain name as user handle. This is a free and (somewhat) decentralized way of having your Bluesky handle verified. If you trust a domain name, then you can trust the handle as well. You can also use subdomains if you want to give your employees or friends their own handle in your domain. A chance for anyone feeling sick about the toxic way X (Twitter) is run the last few years, to break the monopoly. Follow me and I'll follow you back: https://lnkd.in/gqYmYYPC

BlueSky, with over 20 million registered users, is quickly gaining popularity as a more positive alternative to X (formerly Twitter). Should you be active on the platform? Is X (Twitter) growing or shrinking??? Everyone on #X seems to be announcing they are leaving for #threads or #bluesky but they still remain on X and still keep announcing they are leaving every few weeks. It’s a bit like all the celebs and business people who said they would leave the USA if Trump won. But they haven’t. Here are some stats!!! 🔴Monthly users: X claims to have 570 million monthly users, which is a 6% increase year-over-year 🔴Daily user seconds: X is seeing 361.9 billion daily user seconds in cumulative time 🔴Video views: Video views in the app are up 45% to 8.2 billion per day 🔴However, daily users of X have declined consistently since Elon Musk acquired it in 2022. Although Elon says otherwise. 🔴X is the 12th most popular social media platform. 🔴X is more popular with men than women, with male users accounting for almost 61 percent of the platform's user base. 🔴The United States has the highest number of X users worldwide, with 95.6 million users. 🔴Japan has the second highest number of X users worldwide, with 67.4 million users. 🔴About 350,000 tweets/posts are sent every minute on X. 🔴The posts on X get about 100 billion impressions every day. Personally I do find X to be full of poison and annoying bots but amongst the sh*t is quite a bit of opinion that #MSM simply doesn’t tell you.

As someone who interacts with social media in a professional capacity every single day, I am incredibly fascinated by watching the shift momentum we are witnessing from Twitter to Bluesky Social. I won't posit that any single thing is responsible for the migration from the old blue app to the new blue app, but early trends suggest that this change might be more than just a blip that some are suggesting it is. In the past week, the number of users on Bluesky has increased to more than 19 million. For a frame of reference, Bluesky had just crossed 16 million the last time I wrote on this subject (last week). Some have pointed to the recent American election results. Some have pointed to the new terms of use being used by Twitter as of November 15. Some have pointed to other reasons for leaving. The Bluesky number is, of course, nowhere near Twitter's base - it won't be for some time. But one key metric that tells me this isn't just a blip is how many people are beginning to delete their Twitter accounts after moving over to Bluesky. On my own personal account, I have seen a drop of about 80 followers in the past week. Of those, I would estimate about 90% are now following me on my Bluesky account. While 80 followers is not a lot in the grand scheme of things, accounts with much stronger followings than mine are also seeing notable reductions in followers as they shift to Bluesky. Time will tell exactly how "real" this shift is, but one thing is for certain - the early indicators suggest this shift has the potential to be something game-changing.
