Bluesky vs. Mastodon: Which Twitter Alternative Should You Choose? Bluesky and Mastodon are two social media networks with an aim to provide a decentralized platform for users. As microblogging platforms, they also wanted to pitch themselves as a Twitter alternative

At the risk of being accused of virtue signaling, I have finally deactivated my XTwitter account. For me, it’s a matter of conscience. And in all good conscience I can no longer use a platform who’s owner is actively destabilising society, to put it politely. I now have the “luxury” of not having to advise clients, in-house comms teams, CEOs, boards and so on as to what they should do. This is a decision, for me, by me. That said, were I to be once again talking to any of the above, at the very least, I would be advising them to review their use of the platform. For me, it’s really straightforward. It’s about association. Whether you’re an international brand, a small charity, or a person of influence; do you want to be aligned with Musk and his MO? Happy with hate? This isn’t an especially new dilemma. Brands have had wobbles with print and online titles for years. But this is different. There are dark forces at work, and they’re not confined to the Tesla Tzar. Perhaps it’s time for all of us, whether as individuals or representing businesses, Government, third sector, to think again about the investment - in time and money - we make in social media. Clearly, the genie is out of the bottle with all these platforms. But I’m convinced more than ever, that as publishers, for that is what they are, they need regulating. Sooner rather than later. I’d be interested in others views on this.

In case you missed it... Bluesky is growing with a million users per day and it has some really great features. Bluesky is based on the open-source AT Protocol, it has a free and open API and it's fully programmable! But one of the best features is that you can use your own domain name as user handle. This is a free and (somewhat) decentralized way of having your Bluesky handle verified. If you trust a domain name, then you can trust the handle as well. You can also use subdomains if you want to give your employees or friends their own handle in your domain. A chance for anyone feeling sick about the toxic way X (Twitter) is run the last few years, to break the monopoly. Follow me and I'll follow you back: https://lnkd.in/gqYmYYPC

Bluesky seems to be taking off. More than one million new users are joining the platform every day as they are fleeing Twitter. The engagement on our profile over the past week has been higher than it had been for the previous twelve months. The Jellybooks account is also attracting more than one hundred new followers per day and others are seeing similar growth as Booktwitter is deserting X. The trend started getting under way on Tuesday 12 November but has only been accelerating in recent days. Yes, people are also joining other platforms such as Instagram and Threads, but Bluesky is the platform closest to replicating Twitter it seems. Some may say "Remember Mastodon". Mastodon indeed turned out to be a blip. The federated nature of that platform made it simply to complex for most. Bluesky is much simpler and Twitter-like (in a positive way) and a tipping point for people departing Twitter may finally have been reached (it takes a LOT to break strong network effects.) You can find @jellybooks under the same handle on all major social media platforms. However, our level of posting and enagagement varies greatly from one platform to the the next. The most positive aspect is to see a viable alternative emerging to the bonfire that has become a formerly great social media platform.

We never agree with such option that different socials (like Pinterest, Twitter, etc.) continue to show you at signup. It makes no sense at all. They continue to show you such shit suggestions. Even if you don't want to follow them, you generally need to do that (except for few socials like Twitter, if you load the page removing some terms from the url), by wasting time to remove all such unsense accounts. Obviously that influcencers have mio of followers, if the only option is to follow Elon Musk or politicians or other shits. Is like Flickr with mio of followers, since they add it automatically but no one is interested to follow Flickr. Same shit happens for some Telegram Channel too, where you need to follow other 20 shitty channels before you can have access. We are of the opinion that people need to choose what they want. Do you don't want to follow us? That is ok, for us there is no difference at all. For sure we will never implement such shitty things. via https://buff.ly/43EOMGO #rtpnews #roadtopetabyte #telegram #rtpannouncements #roadtopetabyteannouncements #rtpannouncement #roadtopetabyteannouncement

Bluesky Social is getting a lot of attention after going public, here is my honest opinion after using the app for 48 hours. My first opinion of the app is that it is the same as X, minus a few missing features. It was backed by Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, so this is not surprising. Dorsey wants to "put the social, back into social". This is of course after he made a few billion quid from taking the social, out of social (building Twitter). The main selling point for this platform is that it is a 'decentralised' social media app. For the people who aren't nerds, this means the platform is not owned or controlled by a single entity. While this might be the "solution" for "putting the social back into social", the average user isn't bothered about it or doesn't actually understand what it means. I will keep an eye on it and see what I can get out of it but so far, the platform is full of people (still) whining that Elon took over Twitter - so scrolling the feed is pretty unbearable right now. Like any new platform, never focus your marketing efforts on there. If your marketing guy or team is telling you to "be one of the first to jump on", tell them to do one and give us a call. We don't know how this platform will turn out and your target audience isn't over there yet. I'm always hopeful for new platforms, but this is still just a dupe Twitter for now, there is nothing revolutionary. This is the same reason Threads fell on it's arse so quickly. Have you used Bluesky? What are your thoughts so far?
