I hesitated to comment on this, as it feels political, but it ties into the grand vision for my startup: to hold democracies accountable. Most companies must continue to offer more and better products and services, at lower costs to compete. The major exceptions are companies that benefit from regulatory capture (e.g. banks, telcos, dairy,). Companies also benefit from economies of scale: servicing a larger customer base rarely requires a proportional increase in costs (e.g. staff). My city has grown by about 20% over the past 20 years and offers no additional or better service, yet my property taxes have tripled. Somehow, cities manage to do less with more. Governments resist automation, optimization, and efficiency, so while private sector activity continues to provide more for less (look at the price/value of TVs), the government does exactly the opposite (cost of education and healthcare, property taxes, and everything thanks to inflation). These same governments dream about Universal Basic Income (UBI), with no realistic plan of how to fund such a thing. Their plan seems to print money and give it to whoever they can, and for now, that's the people they employ. With AI and automation threatening an incredibly broad range of jobs over the next decade, something like UBI is likely inevitable. However, rather than playing Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor, I believe the path to UBI is to let technology and automation drive the cost of living toward zero. And that includes in government. Sadly, governments that want UBI so badly are doing exactly the opposite. As for how my product will hold democracies accountable? I'll elaborate on that in a future post 😁
Red flag 🇨🇦. The entrepreneurial spirit in Canada is being crushed with a new rush to work for the government. This marks a dramatic deviation in employment. It is concerning to see such a shift away from entrepreneurship, which is a key driver of innovation and economic growth. While working for the government can be a great career path, it is important to not lose sight of the value that small businesses and startups bring to our economy. Let's continue to support and encourage entrepreneurship in Canada. #entrepreneurship #economicgrowth #smallbusinesses #startups #Canada

Increasing levels of taxation, as discouraging as they are, are the tip of the iceberg. This chart, and post, summarizes neatly what I’ve been advocating for years: that declining productivity in Canada is directly related to the slow demise of our private sector incentive system. Few want to take risk. And for those that do, they’re left with the tab for a profligate public sector that knows no limits in its heavy handedness or its spending. Imbalances in post-retirements benefits (ie pensions), work weeks, workforce models (remote vs onsite), and base pay increases are driving more and more individuals away from the private sector. I don’t see much of a solution for the most talented, other than emigration. If you want to invest in, and move to, the USA, message me over our common interests.

What is the future of innovation and entrepreneurship in Canada? As Claudio Rojas, CEO of NACO Canada, well stated in his opening words for the #NACOSummit, it all depends on us, players in this ecosystem. He reminded us that no one would predict Silicon Valley’s success in this area a few decades ago - and yet here it is. Canada is much better equipped to grow its #innovation and #entrepreneurship presence in the world stage. Nexum Ecosystems is determined to support #startups in building their products and bringing them to the Canadian and international markets.
