When I was transitioning careers 6 years ago, I thought my existing contacts were enough. I’d chat with someone, feel hopeful, and then...nothing. Most conversations were one-and-done. We’d talk, I’d share my story, and they’d wish me luck. I never asked, “Who else can I talk to?” My network stayed small, and the opportunities I expected never came. I felt isolated and defeated. It attacked my confidence and made me doubt my career pivot. In one intro conversation with a Fintech CRO, he asked, "Who else have you spoken to?" I blanked and replied, "Uh, just you. That's it." His puzzled look hit me hard. I realized networking was about creating a chain, not just collecting links. Before, I was isolated, relying on a few contacts. After, I proactively expanded my network. Each conversation led to another, and opportunities started to reveal themselves. I didn’t wait for doors to open; I knocked on them. I share this story because this is common networking mistake: thinking one conversation is enough. Always ask, “Who else can I talk to?” and watch your network grow.
