Despite the growing awareness of neurodiversity, myths still persist. Let’s set the record straight: 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟭:Neurodivergent individuals are less capable. 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟮: Neurodivergent conditions must be cured or fixed. 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵 𝟯: Neurodivergent individuals cannot lead fulfilling lives. Depending on how our brains are wired we think, move, process information and communicate in different ways. Neurodiversity is about recognising those who think differently. We can all benefit from different thinkers! Approximately 15-20% of population has a neurological difference. Many ‘challenges’ neurodivergent people face are more to do with the environment and systems they are placed in, often designed by a majority population. Let’s do more to understand, accept and celebrate neurodiversity! https://lnkd.in/g7nN-QYJ #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek #NeuroDiversityWeek #ThisIsND

Did you know it is estimated that 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent? As Neurodiversity Celebration Week draws to a close, we want to continue changing the narrative on neurodiversity. Together, we can combat the misconceptions and focus less on their ‘challenges’ and more on the many strengths and achievements of neurodivergent individuals. Across Cambian, we operate a person-centred approach, tailoring strategies, care and education plans to each individual, harnessing their strengths to build confidence and self-esteem giving them the opportunity to thrive in their day to day lives. #neurodiversitycelebrationweek #neurodiversity

If ADHD is your self-identity you will be more likely to justify, rationalise, and even celebrate unhelpful behaviours that arise from the condition. You will also be less likely to seek help or accept help that might ease or even eradicate the symptoms. In the Irish language an illness is ‘on’ you, not an essential part of who you are and must be. (‘Tá tinneas orm,’ mar shampla. Ní cóir ‘is tinneas mé’ a rá.) Similarly, a label or name is regarded as being ‘on’ you. The English language too easily allows for the equation of illness and essentialised identity or naming/labelling and essentialised identity. Using a diagnosis as an identity lockbox is one of the biggest hindrances to recovery possibilities and processes. I am a Recovery Coach, 10 years and counting, c.5,000 hours and counting. I am a Recovery Coach who specialises in ADHD and burnout. I wear an ADHD diagnosis, but not at all times and not for all occasions.

This is why I do what I do. Just seeing people as people. Not deficits, difficulties or problems to be solved. But. With the understanding that all people need some extra support sometimes. Easy really. #Neurodivergent #NeurodiversityAwareness #NeurodiversitySupport

It’s a perspective that values difference as a natural part of human diversity. Have insights or experiences with embracing neurodiversity? Share your stories in the comments.
