WHAT'S MISSING FROM MUSEUMS? There's an unmet desire from audiences: Active Participation & Personal Connection. Many museums still rely on static displays, expecting visitors to observe quietly. 🥱 Active participation helps visitors internalise and remember what they see, creating a more meaningful, memorable visit. But almost most importantly, people want to engage socially—either on-site with friends/family or via social. Static exhibits don’t facilitate this very well.

This International Museum Day is themed "Museums for Education and Research." It underscores these cultural institutions’ pivotal role in shaping a more informed, sustainable, and inclusive society. “People trust museums as places where they can learn about the world and learn about themselves; museums do so much more than meets the eye,” says Zena Howard FAIA, our global cultural and civic practice leader. For many of the museums and cultural organisations that we work with, finding ways to adapt to evolving audience needs represents a huge challenge. For our recent project with Ulster Museum, we prototyped bold new ways for them to engage with their local visitors so that they could establish what’s important to Belfast’s residents, and what role the museum can play in facilitating connection and cohesion in a community with deep historical divisions. You can find out what we did and how we got on in our latest blog, ‘Causing disruption to shape bolder futures’. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eq4YtAsz

But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.” This famous quote by Einstein is something we have all resonated with at some point. In our latest blog, we explore various strategies museums can implement to engage children and capture their attention. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has launched the first-ever National Museum Survey (NMS) to better understand the impact of museums across the U.S. This data will help inform policymakers, the public, and museum professionals about the vital social, cultural, educational, and economic roles museums play. IMLS invites participation from a wide range of institutions—including children’s museums, zoos, aquariums, historic sites, and more. Results, expected in summer 2025, will be available through reports and a dynamic data portal to support benchmarking and trend analysis. If your institution received an invitation, be sure to participate! Check out the full news release here: https://buff.ly/4gdZngs #Museums #DataMatters #NationalMuseumSurvey

At its core, collaborative curation involves curators working alongside community members, artists, and other stakeholders to develop new exhibitions. In contrast to the traditional top-down model, collaborative curation embraces participatory methods and allows for different perspectives to shape the narrative. And though it isn’t a new concept, it continues to gain traction, particularly as the role of museum curator evolves. 💡Find out how your museum might benefit from collaborative curation along with resources for the best way to go about it: https://lnkd.in/gAq88tcQ #museumexhibitions #museumcurator #exhibitiondesign #museumcommunity #museumlife #museuminnovation #museumoutreach #museumpros #museumprofessionals
