“HOW: INVEST IN NATURE” This slide from Danielle Mulder’s fascinating talk yesterday about the BBC’s sustainability journey was a sight for sore eyes. The corporation is moving fast but responsibly towards a net zero, nature positive future for the business. I hope others will follow their commitment to deep decarbonisation (90%), avoidance of harm to nature, and treating offsets as a genuine last resort. I’ve since been wondering about the UK nature projects into which the BBC would be willing to invest. Danielle cited Nattergal Ltd as an example of a potential partner, and I can see why as they are pioneering a new business model seeking to bridge the gap between private investors and nature restoration. But that mechanism won’t work for UK-wide nature recovery. Not all land could nor should be redirected to that type of enterprise. Much investment will still need to be channelled to more “traditional” farmers, land managers, NGOs etc, for delivery of ecosystem restoration on their land, as part of their business. Not doing so could result in unintended consequences for rural communities, food production etc. I’ll be interested to see how the BBC tackles this as part of their nature-positive strategy.
