7 months ago, I applied for a job for which I wasn't fully qualified. In the job post, I noticed immediately the criterion "at least 3 years of relevant experience in sales." As a fresh college grad at that time, I didn't have any concrete experience—zero. Nonetheless, I applied. I wanted a role where I had room to grow, where I would be challenged and learning at a fast pace. I prepared, studied, and researched deeply about the role and industries, from product solutions to target markets—everything. I passed the interview with the manager and VP of Sales and received a job offer. Someone recently told me that all the other candidates at that time had years of experience and good sales results, and I'm the only one they hired. Not to mention, I'm the youngest (23) on the sales team—not to brag, but to inspire. Now, I work with Emerson (our principal), being their local business partner, offering industrial automation solutions. I handle accounts from Power to Mining, F&B to Chemicals. The right attitude is the lifeblood and it's very important. Product knowledge and technical aspects can be learned. Don’t underestimate the power of your soft skills. Never be deterred from pursuing a role just because you don’t think you're qualified. Don’t self-reject. Just try stuff. If you get rejected, that's fine. At least you gave yourself a shot. It was 2016. I still remember how I felt walking in the long hallway to have a job interview. The engineering department located at the very end of this hallway; sometimes it feels like this very corridor is endless. It’s kind of strange to think how at some point, (finally!) I grew accustomed to this once unfamiliar corridor, as I walked it down every single working day. This is where I landed my first job as a fresh graduate, and the place where I learned and grew for the past 7.5 years (how time flies!). Throughout the amazing opportunity to work here, I was able to learn valuable skills as a mine planner. One of the perks: being able to work with expensive licensed software (which one license could buy you a house) for the ultimate purpose of running (and re-run) various mine sequence simulations schemes (YTTA🤣) Seven and a half year is not a short time, and to leave was a truly difficult decision. I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing experiences and learnings I’ve had at KPP. The most part of it is thanks to the incredible team in the Engineering Department (and my fellow FGDP cohort circa 2017; you know who you are!). Back in 2017, I joined the Engineering team as the youngest, fresh out of college (and the most clueless — six months in, I got shifted from database geologist to mine plan engineer lol) member of the team. I truly appreciate the patience, guidance, and knowledge they’ve shared along the way. They have my most heartfelt gratitude, and no amount of words would suffice to express how grateful I am to have crossed paths with them. Moving forward, Kalimantan Prima Persada (KPP Mining) was a highlight for sure, and I have no doubt that KPP will continue to achieve great things and fly higher; just like the company’s slogan! February 2017 - June 2024 (yes, this is a post long overdue) Looking forward to see each other again, insya Allah. In the meantime, hopefully we could stay connected :-) One remarkable chapter has closed, here’s to embracing new adventure. Bismillah.

Finally, I have some time to catch up on this. It is not just a piece of news, but a closure to a part of my memories - I started my #engineering career as an #intern in #Shell #Singapore 20 years ago! As a university student, that 6 months internship in Shell lit up my aspiration in the Engineering world, particularly in the #OilandGas industry. I am blessed to be put on an accelerated path in that 6 months. From the 1st week of performing simple tasks like balancing a reciprocating pump and scheduling Maintenance Team, I was made a Project Leader eventually to oversee a major equipment overhaul project. Catalyst Stripper & Regen Furnace - that is a beast! A confined space towering at 4 storeys tall, 50 meters long, firing all year long over hundreds of Degree Celcius. We had to shut down the entire plant for 14 days just for this darling. I burnt many nights reading boxes of Equipment Data, Instruction Manuals and P&ID. But more than Engineering aspect, leading that project let me gain many practical wisdom in #leadership and #management. How did a student-intern lead a team of M&E Technicians and Technologists with a combined experience of >150 years, and 2 teams of 40-man external Contractors? I don't know how I did it, but we completed the project 1 day early! 😉 As a young man, I was deeply impacted by the strong and consistent #corporateculture of Shell especially in Corporate Governance, People (integrity, respect), Trust, Teamwork and Professionalism. I believe it has shaped my DNA early for my roles in Emerson and Bosch, both as corporate citizen and as corporate leader. Thank you, Shell, especially the Catalytic Subsidiary I was in. You have made a difference in a young mind, and have prepared him well to contribute significantly in the #OilandGas, #automotive and #ICT #Tech industries subsequently. Aggregate that as a nation, more than cemented Singapore as the "Houston of Asia", you have helped this nation trained up many local #industrial #talent who are now elevating this nation to the world stage across various industries.
