To mark ‘Giving Tuesday’, a global day of generosity, the Fundraising Regulator, Charity Commission for England and Wales and Action Fraud join forces to remind people how to give with confidence. The campaign comes at the start of the festive season, during which people across the UK are more likely to donate to charity than in the rest of the year. A recent study by the Charities Aid Foundation found that 67 per cent of people in the UK had donated money to charitable causes in the past month. Last year, charities’ overall income amounted to £90.5bn, enabling them to deliver crucial services and assistance to individuals and communities, invest in medical research and campaign against inequalities, to name just a few causes. https://lnkd.in/eBdcyxkV

Charity parachute jumps A study in ‘Injury, the International Journal Of The Care Of The Injured’ looked at injures sustained at two Perthshire parachuting centres and treated at Perth Royal Infirmary. Over the five years surveyed, the hospital treated 174 charity jumpers - of which 103 had sufficiently serious injuries to require admission. The study estimated that one in nine charity skydivers would be injured, with an average treatment cost per patient of £3,751. How does this compare with the money raised ? The charity jumps in the survey raised £120,000 – but after deducting jump fees (skydives aren’t cheap) this dwindled to just £45,000. So every £1 raised for charity cost the NHS £13.75.  A classic example of unintended consequences.

This is the skin of someone living with EB, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s largest organ; the skin. People living with EB are missing the essential proteins that bind the skin’s layers together, so any minor friction, movement or trauma causes it to break and blister. It’s debilitating. Barrack Charitable Trust donates £42,000 to support 23 charities across Scotland In the spirit of the festive season, the Barrack Charitable Trust, funded by Knight Property Group, is delighted to announce that is has donated almost £42,000 to 23 charities across Scotland. This significant contribution is part of the Trust's biannual giving programme, aimed at supporting a diverse range of organisations dedicated to making a difference in their communities across the country. From grassroots initiatives to nationwide efforts, the Trust’s donations will help tackle pressing issues such as poverty, homelessness, mental health and youth support. The winter tranche of funding comes at a crucial time, as many charities face increased demand for their services during the holiday season. Trust Chairman James Barrack, shared his thoughts: "We are incredibly proud to support such a wide range of worthwhile causes across Scotland, through the Barrack Charitable Trust. We believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work and this is especially meaningful as we approach the festive season. Did you know that this week is #HospicecareWeek? More importantly, did you know that Weldmar Hospicecare raises more money through our chain of charity stores that we recieve from the NHS? That's right. Second hand clothes, recycled furniture and children's toys raise more than twice the amount of money than we recieve from the NHS. Imagine any other health care service that relies on selling second hand goods to fund dignified and compassionate person centred care. Last year 1,129,564 items were sold in our charity shops - without which, our services would look very different. Why is raising awareness of this important. Well, it's twofold. Firstly, it's important that people support their local charity shops. Donate, browse and buy - it keeps vital services on the road and adds such value to a challenging highstreet. But secondly, because allowing charities, and in this case hospices, to rely on second hand sales to fund vital care services is not sustainable. Change needs to happen and hospices need to be funded fairly and sustainably. Write to your MP. Charity Detectives strike again... The Revitalising Trusts project, a collaboration between The Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) and Foundation Scotland, has so far released over £5 million of dormant funds for public benefit since the project launched in 2021.  Scotland is well-known as being a nation of givers. Across generations families, individuals and businesses the length and breadth of the country have set up charitable trusts for the benefit of others. Donors often choose causes which they are connected to, are concerned or passionate about. However, for many different reasons a trust can become inactive, meaning that funds effectively lie dormant rather than delivering charitable benefit as intended. It can be difficult to recruit new trustees, find time to run the charity or as times change, it can be impossible to identify beneficiaries befitting the original deeds of the trust. The Revitalising Trusts project has to date identified over 300 inactive charitable trusts of varying sizes and purposes, with forgotten funds often lying dormant in accounts for several decades and in some cases well over a century.
