Events like the Kentucky Derby contribute to an increase in the number of homeless encampment clearings in the Louisville region. This escalation adds to the vulnerability, unpredictability, and psychological distress experienced by displaced individuals without homes. While many clearings necessitate a 21-Day Warning, they can be expedited if deemed an "emergency", requiring only a 24-hour notice. These sudden displacements result in the loss of personal belongings, including important documents, and make it challenging for service providers to locate and assist clients during this period of heightened instability. Through this year’s Big Give Campaign, we are aiming to raise funds to support our Violence against Women and Girls project which reaches, engages and empowers girls and young women aged 16 - 26 who are experiencing or have experienced gender-based violence against them. Through the delivery of the project, we have learned that individuals who experience and/or are at risk of abuse, harm and exploitation face growing challenges including addiction, homelessness, mental and/or physical ill health including learning difficulties / disabilities, poverty etc because of the trauma they have experienced.
