One year ago, we asked ourselves a question... How do we maximise our potential as a force for good in the world? Today we have the answer:  Introducing - Science for Humanity, the new strategy for #OurImperial community. 💙 Science for Humanity centres on 9 initiatives that will secure our position among the world's leading institutions tackling global grand challenges and driving economic growth: 1. Imperial Inspires 💡 - We will strive to be a world leader in attracting young minds to STEMB and supporting them on their STEMB journey through life. 2. Imperial Class of 2030 🎓 - The Imperial Class of 2030 will be the most talented, the most enterprising and the most diverse we have ever had the privilege to serve. 3. Imperial Empowers 💪 - We will help to future-proof careers, businesses and communities by providing the advanced skills training and values-driven leadership needed to thrive in a tech-enabled world.    4. Imperial Innovates ✨ - We will scale up our world-class innovation ecosystem for world-changing impact. 5. Imperial Talent 💼 - We will provide sector-leading opportunities for early-career STEMB staff, from first-year PhD students and postdoctoral fellows to those taking on their first position in academia, industry or policy. 6. Imperial Global 🗺️ - We will be a convenor, collaborator and partner of choice to facilitate the flow of ideas, talent and innovation to tackle grand global challenges.  7. Imperial Futures 🔮 - We will create four cross-cutting Schools of Convergence Science that build on our disciplinary strengths and interdisciplinary culture to create research communities in key areas including sustainability, human and artificial intelligence, health, and security sciences. 8. Imperial WestTech Corridor 🏗️ - We will convene a unique set of innovation assets to create a vibrant new ecosystem of globally competitive scale that is a powerful engine for investment, inclusive economic growth and job creation.  9. BEYA38: Celebrating Excellence in STEM Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the 38th BEYA Conference in Baltimore. It was a convergence of brilliance, innovation, and diversity—a true celebration of what makes STEM thrive. Key Takeaways: -Diversity Unleashes Magic: BEYA38 reinforced that diversity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s the secret sauce for groundbreaking innovation. When minds from different backgrounds collide, magic happens. The energy in those conference halls was electric! -New Connections: Meeting fellow professionals, visionaries, and rising stars was invigorating. The talent pool was vast, and the conversations—priceless. -UL Research Institutes: At our modest booth, we proudly introduced UL Research Institutes’ contributions to safety science. ULRI strives to tangibly save lives through research and innovation—that’s the heart of STEM. Witnessing that spark ignite in students and professionals as we discussed ULRI’s mission was incredibly rewarding. Mark your calendar for next year’s BEYA39 event. Zafin proudly announces the first-ever Aspire & Achieve Scholarship winners. Last year, Zafin announced that it was beginning the Aspire & Achieve Scholarship program with the intention of finding and supporting the next great women leaders in STEM and engineering. We are dedicated to making our industry as diverse as we can be, fostering a capable and inclusive workforce. And with these six driven, talented individuals, we know we have found exactly the kind of students we were searching for. The inaugural recipients, spanning every region in which Zafin operates, are as follows. Our five Aspire & Achieve STEM Scholarship winners are: 1. Gayathri Jyothrimai 2. Rayna Esther Felix 3. Kate Ram 4. Stephanie Quon 5. Krishnendu Manoj And our first-ever Aspire & Achieve in Engineering Scholarship winner is: Ali Awil. The only way to know what's on the other side of the wall is to get on the other side ~ Oluwafisayomi Oludare ______________________________________________ This year particularly stands out for me. Why? I finally decided to get on the other side, and dominate this other side. January came with an "Unlocking Your Brain" event, which gathered global interest (we had participants from different countries... #germany, #belgium and many others). I was so excited that students all over the world knew, recognized and were willing to do better and be more. However, this feat spurred up a dissatisfaction within me. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴? This pool is but a small drop in the vast ocean of students globally, looking and desiring to become their best in their diverse fields. There's still so much to be done, and many more to be reached. Fast forward to February, and I'm now part of the #20daylinkedinchallengewithhaoma in response to that inner dissatisfaction, to set my sail on the ocean of academic growth. It's been quite an interesting journey so far with Haoma holding us by the hand and leading us, as the LinkedIn Queen she is. The stats and numbers have been good, yet I am looking beyond the numbers, and focusing on the Deeper Why (as Haoma taught). I press and continue to press towards this high calling: to be not A̶ f̶o̶r̶c̶e̶, but 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 behind academic growth and success, rippling into global impact. Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Societal Challenges with Opportunities Fellowship (SCOPE) program of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) aims to provide opportunity to Women Scientists and Technologists who have completed Ph.D. and want to utilize their S&T knowledge and expertise for the benefit of society. This program promotes projects that directly deal with challenges at grassroots level and address them through S&T interventions. Project proposal should include the development of viable technology/technique with possibility of lab-to-land transfer, adaptation and scaling up for the benefit of society under identified broad thematic areas.

During the recent study trip to Vienna Výskumná a inovačná autorita (VAIA) have learnt among other things that: - Almost 1/4 of Austrian start-ups originated in academic institutions - There are around 90 academic spin-offs each year - 49% of all start-ups are founded by male teams, 26% by mixed teams and only 2% by female only teams - There is a new Austrian state-financed VC fund - There is a new legal form for companies: Flexible company - There are new conditions for the residence permit (lowering income requirements, putting stronger emphasis on English proficiency, simplifying verification of profession skills) - There is lack of technical talent caused among other things also by lack of interest in studying STEM programmes in Austrian (well funded) universities Hoping to transfer some of Austrian initiatives into local policy proposals. 🤓Did you know that the groundbreaking discovery that stars 🌟are made primarily of hydrogen was made by a woman? Cecilia Payne's incredible contributions to astrophysics *literally* changed the way we understand the universe! 🌌✨ Despite revolutionizing our knowledge of the cosmos, Cecilia Payne's work often goes unrecognized. As Jeremy Knowles once noted, *"Every high school student knows Newton, Darwin, and Einstein... but when it comes to the composition of our universe, no one wonders how we know."* 🧐 Even her newspaper obituaries failed to mention her greatest discovery! Cecilia Payne is a trailblazer. 💫 Her journey wasn’t easy. When her mother refused to fund her education, she won a scholarship to Cambridge. She completed her studies there—only for Cambridge to deny her a degree because of her gender. Undeterred, she moved to the U.S. and became the first person to earn a PhD in astronomy from Radcliffe College. 📚 She *literally* discovered what the universe and our sun are made of. And yet, many of her male colleagues received the credit. Cecilia was also the reason we understand variable stars today and the first woman to be promoted to full professor at Harvard. 🚀 She broke the glass ceiling and inspired generations of women to pursue careers in science and technology.
