Preview of Our Upcoming Project When our mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we found the process of exploring clinical trials to be incredibly overwhelming. Navigating these trials often involves understanding complex medical terminology and specific disease characteristics, tasks that are ideally managed by an experienced oncologist. However, we recognize that many Canadians seeking clinical trials outside of Canada face significant challenges due to the lack of local oncological support and the steep learning curve associated with understanding trial eligibility criteria. To address this need, we have reviewed approximately 200 clinical trial listings from ClinicalTrials. gov and organized the eligibility criteria into a user-friendly questionnaire. This tool is designed to help you quickly assess clinical trial eligibility and can be used as an attachment when communicating with study coordinators. Please note that this is just a preliminary look at what we are developing. The current page only showcases the initial information, and there is still substantial work to be done on the backend. I was recently invited to share my insights with Brian Bossetta regarding the FDA’s new initiative aimed at advancing clinical trial diversity. The FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) has launched an Equity Program to improve access to oncology clinical trials for historically marginalized groups, including racial and ethnic minorities, rural populations, and those facing barriers to healthcare access. The initiative is a significant step towards reducing health disparities and ensuring that all patients have the opportunity to participate in potentially life-saving trials. If oncology clinical trial participants do not adequately reflect the diverse groups of people who are affected by cancer, there is a risk of developing treatments that may be less effective or have different side effects for certain ethnic or racial groups. It may also perpetuate existing health disparities and limit access to cutting-edge therapies for these communities. Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard (MRCT Center) Center has been engaged with a multistakeholder group of colleagues in the Equitable Access to Clinical Trials (EACT) project, an initiative hosted by LUNGevity Foundation to promote sharing best practices and foster collaborative action to advance financial neutrality for patients participating in clinical trials. Patients cite cost as a top reason for declining clinical trial participation. Without comprehensive, explicit regulatory guidance on the acceptability of financial support for trial participants, sponsor and institutional review board (IRB) interpretations of what is fair, compliant, and achievable will continue to vary. New materials for eliminating financial burden for participants in clinical trials that are now are now available on EACT project website. These include a report on best practice considerations for sponsors, a "Participant Needs and Assessment Guide" to aid clinical trial site personnel in determining patients' assistance needs, and a tool for clinical trial staff on "Engaging with Sponsors about Financial Support Programs for Participants."
