It’s good to present research that is conflict free and doesn’t read like an industry advertisement. But the presentation of this The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. study swings the pendulum too far, but not for reasons the Luddites will cite. Yes, this outstanding study confirms anecdotally observed early clinical advantages associated with “robotic-arm-assisted” total knee arthroplasties using biologic markers in a small prospective RCT secondary to a reduced local inflammatory response. However, the study presumes all robot-assisted platforms are equivalent. This couldn’t be further from reality. Lesser technologies leverage non-discriminatory studies like these to elevate their lagging platforms with a non-discriminatory readership. Worse, it works so hard to hide the fact that this was a MAKO robotic arm. This is only apparent if you happen to have access to the full PDF and happen to look at the 19th reference which points to a clinical trial that fortunately discloses the use of the MAKO. It’s not an advertisement if your product is one-of-a-kind. It’s just facts.
