Welcome to my weekly #CoeliacAwareness Month post! Last week I introduced the topic of coeliac disease - an autoimmune condition that's incurable, but managed through a gluten-free diet. It's not always easy. There are a number of hurdles to get over just to get diagnosed (the symptoms are not always obvious, or specific to this disease) - I got diagnosed based on a self-referral for anxiety and migraines, which led to a blood test, which led to the discovery that I had more or less zero iron reserves, which eventually led to tests for coeliac disease... 🤯 And then there's the management side. I've spent the last two years recovering from the damage done while my condition was not yet diagnosed. And just learning to live with it too. Luckily, there is support out there! Many countries have a charity organisation that offers information and advice and campaigns to raise awareness. In the UK, we have Coeliac UK, for instance. If I'm planning a trip abroad, I always look up that country's equivalent for more information about conditions for coeliacs "on the ground" - what food labelling is like, how available safe food is in supermarkets, tips for safe places to eat out, translations of useful words in the local language... (#Italy is brilliant, by the way, if you're #gluten-free and looking for a holiday destination...) The European umbrella association for these organisations - AOECS - Gluten Free Alliance - is running some interesting webinars this month relating to coeliac disease. I'm checking out today's offering below 👇 our of both personal interest and because it might offer insights for my #medical/#healthcare-related #translation work. A win-win! I'll be back with more insights into #coeliac life next week...for now I'm off to grab myself a nutritious gluten-free lunch! #Coeliac #LITranslators #translation #proofreading #English #Deutsch #Francais #Svenska #Medical

The statistics shared in this short video by Mark Hyman, MD are eye-opening! Approximately 67% of our kids diet is made of ultra-processed foods. It's no wonder chronic disease is on the rise! Seriously, take 60 seconds and watch this powerful clip!
The excessive consumption of unhealthy, ultra-processed foods is the root cause of our country’s chronic disease crisis. About 60% of our diet is ultra-processed food, and among children the share is 67%. For every 10% of our diet that is ultra-processed, the risk of death increases 14%. In fact, diet now exceeds smoking as the number one cause of disease and death. We can cure chronic disease beyond the clinic – we can cure it on the farm, in the grocery store, and in the kitchen. Our country needs a Food Fix. Visit www.foodfix.org to learn about how our education efforts.

While "anti-aging" is a good marketing angle, I think more longevity discussion should be focused on disease prevention and strength preservation... A good starting place: a meat-based diet, limiting sugar, flour, and high PUFA / seed oils.
