Recently, I spoke with an old friend who shared his frustration with content marketing. Initially, his efforts brought engagement, followers, and conversions. But soon, everything stalled.
This is a common problem. The culprit? Relying on templates and the "if it works for others, it should work for us" mentality. Finding Quick Fixes or Templating for Growth Doesn't Work—Especially for Brands! Faced with a blank slate, we brainstormed a playbook tailored to his brand's unique needs and goals.
First, let's understand why this templated approach backfires. Brands online often strive to create the best content, but focus too much on appearing as a "brand." Audiences don't connect with brands just because their feed looks good. Think like a person who scrolls through YouTube or Instagram after a long day. People want content that entertains and relaxes them. If they encounter content that uniquely talks about a product, they might engage with it. This is where rigid brand marketing strategies fall short.
We began by deeply understanding his product. Since media was central to the product, our messaging and distribution had to align. Knowing the product inside out is crucial for creating a solid plan. This understanding helps in knowing the audience and how the product fits into their lives.
With a solid grasp of both the product (organisation) and the audience, we created cohorts and identified the two with the highest intent. This focus allowed us to deliver targeted content. We then developed a content plan ensuring strong cultural integration in all communications.
The result? In less than 15 days, the channel achieved 50% retention on the first upload, gained over 2000 YouTube subscribers, and surpassed a million views on Instagram, adding another 3000 followers. A point to note, this was a fiercely competitive category. Moreover all this without compromising on brand building.
While I won't dive into other optimizations here (I've covered them in previous posts), it's vital to balance data and creativity. Following data strictly without understanding your audience won't yield results. In my opinion, true success comes from knowing who you are creating for and blending data with creativity.
