Breaking Cultural Barriers – What Can We Learn from Global Conversations?
Have you ever wondered how much our cultural background shapes what we say, and what we don’t?
This question stayed with me throughout the Soliya Connect Program, where students from around the world gathered weekly for open discussions on topics like freedom of speech, identity, and globalization. As a Dutch student, I often take freedom of expression for granted, but my peers from different regions shared how expressing opinions could lead to social or even legal consequences.
This realization made me rethink how I approach cross-cultural conversations. Instead of assuming common ground, I learned to ask: “What experiences shape your views?” This approach not only deepened discussions but also strengthened trust and mutual understanding.
For example, during a conversation on identity, a peer explained how their community’s strong religious ties shaped their sense of belonging. This contrasted with my own experience of finding purpose through independence and education. Programs like Soliya demonstrate how global conversations can shift perspectives and foster empathy.
Why should this matter to you?
In an interconnected world, cross-cultural communication is essential for both personal and professional growth. Whether you’re in finance, healthcare, or tech, understanding cultural nuances helps build stronger partnerships and prevents misunderstandings.
