I once worked in an 2 person office with no windows and when my colleague was WFH I would turn the lights off in the office as they were too bright for me. The only problem was: the kettle, for the corridor of offices, was in my office, so when people walked in to make a cup of tea, they’d jump when they saw me and then bang the light on. This was pre-ADHD diagnosis, now I know this is a sensory issue, if I’m in an office all day, I will try to find time in the day where I can work in a less bright space. I also, always, bring my loop ear plugs, which are a godsend for filtering out noise. As someone with ADHD, I can’t filter out background noise as easily as a neurotypical person and so I can appear distracted, this is why there’s often the stigma that people with ADHD are unfocused. We don’t actually have an attention defecit, we pay too much attention to too many things around us. I’m hyper-aware, my senses are heightened and therefore, if I can’t block out the noise or the light, I will be distracted and overstimulated by it. Did you know about sensory issues with ADHD? Do you have any tips for an ADHDer in an office environment? #ADHDawarenessmonth #neurodiversity #sensoryissues
