Alberta is investing more in skilled-trades apprenticeships in an attempt to meet the demand for housing. Alberta has prioritized trade apprenticeships that lead to Red Seal certifications — a nationally recognized designation that enables individuals to work outside of the province in which they were trained. But many of the jobs on work sites do not require apprenticeship-level training. “Not everybody needs to be a Red Seal trade,” says Shane Wenzel 🏘️, a Calgary-based home builder who has worked in the construction industry for nearly 40 years. “[On]e of the biggest deterrents to that younger age group especially is the length of time it takes to get that [certification], which is roughly four years.” Read more from Samuel Forster: https://lnkd.in/eGvvjUKe

Before I joined the Foundation, National Apprenticeship Week was not something I was tracking. Or even knew was a thing. But today, I understand the power of apprenticeship - the skillful mentors and trainers, the employees who are advancing into new opportunities and lifelong careers, and the employers who are making it all possible by investing in the future of their workforce. Quality standards elevate those who do it right. The recent Construction Industry Institute, (CII) study concluded that “each dollar invested in craft training can yield $1.30 to $3.00 in benefits” - the result of a more efficient workforce positively impacting contractors’ overall profitability. NCCER accreditation is key performance indicator of a true commitment to quality training; training that will improve safety, increase profitability and develop a skilled workforce. We are all in.

This recognition solidifies AICPA’s role in shaping the future of finance and accounting education. 2️⃣ Expansion of Opportunities: Being recognized as an Apprenticeship Ambassador allows AICPA to promote the benefits of apprenticeships more widely. It creates a bridge for students and career-changers, especially those from underrepresented or non-traditional backgrounds, to enter the accounting profession without needing the traditional college pathway. 3️⃣ Alignment with National Workforce Priorities: The U.S. DOL’s Apprenticeship Ambassador initiative is part of a broader effort to expand and modernize apprenticeships across industries. AICPA’s inclusion in this initiative signals that the accounting profession is at the forefront of innovation in talent development, aligning with the national focus on closing skills gaps through hands-on, earn-while-you-learn programs. 4️⃣ Enhancing Apprenticeship Models: AICPA can use its platform as an ambassador to further enhance its existing registered apprenticeship programs, such as the Finance Business Partner apprenticeship and the youth apprenticeship version. It opens up opportunities for collaboration with other industries and organizations to expand the scope and impact of these programs. 5️⃣ Driving Industry Standards: As an Apprenticeship Ambassador, AICPA is well-positioned to influence the standards and frameworks for apprenticeships in finance and accounting, potentially setting the benchmark for similar programs in other industries.
