Julia Hartz, co-founder of Eventbrite on making better hiring decisions by focusing on the underlying problems and skills needed before considering specific candidates. She emphasizes the importance of avoiding hiring mistakes but also acting quickly to correct them when they occur. "Don't make hiring mistakes, but if you do make them, fix them quickly." Hartz suggests beginning with a clear understanding of the customer problem to be solved, then identifying the necessary skills, experience, and attributes to address it and only afterwards reviewing actual resumes. "If you were to solve that problem in the most effective and efficient way, which skills would you need to have?" She highlights how sticking to a systematic, problem-first hiring process leads to stronger, more successful teams. "Every time we stick to that process religiously we have a great outcome." The "About" section of your Linkedin profile is so important. But most candidates are writing it as a biography instead of a 30 second elevator pitch. As an executive think about the unique value or selling point for why a CEO would want you on their team, what are three big business problems or superpowers that you have and can support an organization with. Put yourself in the hiring managers shoes and write a paragraph addressed to them. Instead of: 15 years experience in startups Try: Utilizing my 15 years in startups I help founders avoid common pitfalls and scale quickly Tailor your About me section as a 30 second elevator pitch for a recruiter or hiring manager, for the position you want. Stand out from the crowd. Follow me for more!

In every startup I have been part of, there has been (at least) one employee who carries the business on their shoulders. That one person who understands the business intimately well, has a founder mentally, is respected across the entire organization, and the founders are terrified of losing. I think your ability as a founder to recognize who those people are and then promote/reward them internally, irrespective of their backgrounds, is so so important! Often, we tend to search externally for amazing talent with impressive resumes from big brands — those who look great in our pitch decks. But more often than not, the people you need are right in front of you. It’s very hard to bring in an experienced executive who will be a great fit for your org. Some people might have an incredible history of success yet fail repeatedly at a startup. My experience has taught me it's better to promote kickass talent from within rather than trying to find them outside the organization. Like all rules of thumb, this holds true to a certain extent. Sooner or later, you do need some fresh blood to steer things internally and offer a unique perspective. Just be mindful of how often you are looking for solutions outside, given the history of getting sh*t done right in front of your eyes.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 Your most valuable asset in a startup is your people. Here’s how to assemble a team that drives success: 1️⃣ Hire Above Your Grade: Surround yourself with A-players who challenge and elevate your company. Don’t settle for less. 2️⃣ Focus on EQ and CQ: Emotional intelligence and cultural alignment are just as critical as skills. Hire candidates who fit your values and enhance your team dynamic. 3️⃣ Prioritize Passion Over Perks: Passionate employees bring engagement, productivity, and commitment to your mission.
