If we have decided to implement the EU-Deforestation Regulation, please let it be for the good of the small holder farmer, and the impact at farm level! I believe a regulation like the #EUDR can be a good step, but has the potential to only be beneficial to large exporters and farmers, and might exclude small holder farmers, who are marginalised often already. Power to the farmers: let's empower those who deserve the extra revenue of high quality coffee. How? By traceability and geolocalization trainings of local communities and local consultants? Curious for your thoughts! Thanks CBI - Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries for the invitation to speak and Fred Janssen. #Europe #Deforestation #smallholders #coffee #sustainability #premiumcoffee #farming
THROWBACK | On 25 and 26 June, CBI organised a two-day event in Copenhagen for alumni in the coffee sector. ☕ Following a similar event last year in Rwanda, this year's theme centred around the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). As the European market sets increasingly high Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) requirements in the coffee sector, CBI met with former Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) exporters last week to discuss the implications of the EUDR, which will take effect on 1 January 2025. ✅ This event provided an excellent platform to reconnect with alumni and discuss crucial topics affecting the coffee sector. Engaging with former participants offered valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by the EUDR. Key speakers included Gustavo Ferro, Jeroen (Jerome) Kruft, Michael K Jakobsen, Ariel Zorrilla, Teun Vogel, Muhammad N. M. Fadli, David Browning and Anne-Marie Roorda. Looking forward to presenting on the future of certification (as a means to accelerate the systemic transitions we need) in tea, tomorrow with ETP.
Big news: Our #KenyaTeaForum is tomorrow! And we're really excited by the prospect of having so many stakeholders in the Kenyan tea industry present, from ETP member companies, producer companies, government representatives, civil society organisations, to industry experts. Bringing together these key agents for open and frank discussion forms the straightest path to progress, and ETP is uniquely positioned to facilitate this opportunity. Keep an eye on our social channels as things kick off tomorrow with a look at the future of certification in tea (presented by the insightful Joost Backer from strategic consultancy NewForesight) as we share some of the key moments from Nairobi. Very informative panel discussion focusing on the power of many in addressing Global Food System Challenges Through a BioEconomy facilitated by Bernhard Van Lengerich, PhD. (Seeding The Future Foundation). Mathias Mogge (Welthungerhilfe (WHH)) stressed the importance of supporting small farmers with technology and encouraging bold social entrepreneurs, using AgriShare Uganda as an example. He urged governments to translate global policies to benefit local farmers, and emphasized the need for investment in research & development as a case for The Toothpick Project. Ertharin Cousin (Food Systems for the Future ) highlighted the need for financial capital to scale up, warning that governments are retreating from their CAADP commitments. Mandla Nkomo (Partners in Food Solutions) emphasized Africa’s growing role in the bioeconomy, while Vikash K Abraham Naandi Foundation) advocated for market-led, climate-smart production. #GlobalBioeconomySummit2024
