The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a milestone in disability rights, paving the way for greater accessibility and equality. Despite this, many disabled individuals like myself still face daily challenges and stigma. Have you ever felt that deep, sinking feeling of disappointment when something you were excited about suddenly crumbles into dust? Imagine feeling this way every single day simply because of your disability and who you are. Over the weekend, you're left out of social outings due to perceived social awkwardness. On Monday, you’re turned down for another job opportunity because of your anxiety disorder. On Tuesday, a friend accuses you of faking your disability. By Friday, you're too exhausted to explain anymore, and it feels easier to hide everything than to repeatedly face disappointment. This is the daily reality for many disabled individuals. Stigma, misconceptions about what disability "looks" like, and a true lack of understanding contribute to the lack of support we receive. As a disabled individual, it’s hard to feel true pride during Disability Pride Month. For me, it’s not just about celebrating what I can accomplish or my identity as a disabled person; it’s about speaking out about my reality. By sharing our stories, we can encourage others to do the same and collectively shift the narrative on disability and the supports we need. Because true change begins when we refuse to stay silent. Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities! Celebrating all disability rights advocates across the world leading persons with disabilities causes. Don't relent in the push for an inclusive society devoid of all forms of discrimination. You're truly amazing people our world needs. May God bless you all. Amen. As development practitioners, we are reminded that "Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world" also means facilitating innovations for disability inclusive development in employment (SDG8) and in reducing inequality (SDG10). Of course, not without meaningful engagement with Persons with Disabilities and their representative organizations, amplifying their voice and agency in the process. That's what we do at CBM Global Disability Inclusion.

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities! We've joined forces with the European Disability Forum (EDF) and 50+ organisations in urging EU Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib to prioritise disability rights. Our collective voice highlights a critical concern: the EU's Disability Rights Strategy 2021-2030 needs an updated roadmap beyond 2023. While we celebrate achievements like the European Disability Card law, without a strategic review, we risk five years of stagnation in disability rights advancement. We must not let progress halt. Every person with a disability, including those living with #MultipleSclerosis, deserves continued advancement in rights and quality of life. Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities! As a dedicated Disability Advocate, I am honoured to celebrate this significant day, which shines a light on the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities across the globe. Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to creating an inclusive world where everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. Disability is not a barrier; it is a unique perspective that enriches our communities and workplaces. 🔹 Inclusivity: Let us champion environments that are accessible and welcoming to all. 🔹 Empowerment: Let us support individuals with disabilities by providing the tools and resources they need to succeed. 🔹 Awareness: Let us raise awareness about the challenges faced by the disabled community and work towards eliminating stigma and discrimination. Together, we can build a world where diversity is celebrated, and every individual is valued. Let us make every day a step closer to inclusivity and equality.

The United Nations has unveiled this year’s theme for International Day of People with Disabilities: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.” This theme reflects the powerful slogan of the global disability rights movement: “Nothing About Us Without Us.” This call emphasizes the necessity of participation, representation, and inclusion, encouraging persons with disabilities to shape their own futures and contribute meaningfully to a more equitable society. On that note, we wanted to share the perspectives of some of our graduates at Melly’s and their employers. We’d love to see you to all today to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. But if you can’t make it in, consider something you could do today or any day to open a door to an opportunity for a person with a disability. It could be as simple as a conversation. #herestocelebratingallabilities #internationaldayofpeoplewithdisabilities #inclusionmatters #diversityincludesdisability #disability #disabilityawareness LCBO Nella Noakes

🌍 Wilton Park Retreat: Advancing the Disability Rights Agenda 🌍 Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasizes the need to strengthen our commitment to disability rights. Despite progress since the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, many barriers persist. The UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS), launched in 2019, aims to ensure accountability and inclusivity within the UN framework. Türk calls for reassessing and increasing political and financial support for disability rights. Disability rights offer a unique opportunity for global cooperation, free from political and geopolitical disputes. By working together, we can turn these rights into lived realities, empowering people with disabilities and their representative organizations. Let's move beyond declarations and take concrete actions to deliver on our commitments. #DisabilityRights #Inclusion #HumanRights #UN #OHCHR #HumanRightsEconomy 🤝✨
