Since her university days, when she first encountered the challenges faced by a blind friend struggling with digital barriers, Helen has been ignited by a vision to make the digital world accessible for all. Her career transition from general testing to focusing exclusively on accessibility underlines her commitment. My first exposure to participatory democracy was at work in a Civic Tech company Decision 21. So the topic of #digital participation has a special place in my heart 💙 Until today I continue to actively engage with it. Here are a few of my ground rules to approaching digital participation in my work: 🛠 Civic Tech is NOT a solution to all #engagement problems or a magic wand that can generate high levels of participation. It is merely a tool, and as any other tool it can be used well or not. It’s on you to make sure a Civic Tech tool works. 🔎 First, in order to use the tool well, you need to understand whether you even need a tool. Sometimes you can do things better without it. You don’t use sieve for drinking tea for obvious reasons, similarly you wouldn’t need a proposal making tool for voting. 🐾 If you do use a tool, you also need a clear process and guidelines on when and how to use it. Don’t expect people to know how to engage with it, so craft a user-friendly digital engagement path. It might sound very obvious, yet majority of issues with digital participation stem from disregarding those basic principals. Helping others avoid these mistakes, find the right tools, and run engaging processes online is the driving force beyond our upcoming Civic Tech Report 2025 and I cannot wait to share more information about it in the next days 🤩 What about your experience with Civic Tech? Despite the end of the global Women Who Code organization. WWCode Berlin is here to stay! Now as Women Coders Berlin!* Although this community is still under (re-)construction. Sarah Wachs & Lena Simon are doing a fantastic job at keeping their mission alive. Women Coders Berlin is dedicated to empowering diverse women to excel in their tech journey. They welcome women and allies who are engineers, software developers, data scientists, designers and other technologists. Their goal is to support you to grow your career, connect with like-minded people and for you to feel welcome in tech. I've had the pleasure of collaborating with Sarah. Support the #A11YTO Community Mission Through Your Participation I had the privilege of attending their latest meetup, organized by Juan Olarte. I gained valuable insights from the speakers, Anna Tendera, PhD (she/her) and Josiah Gifford. They gave an amazing talk on Sustainable Accessibility. My Takeaways: 💡 Accessibility is often overlooked, but from a business perspective, addressing it earlier is more cost-effective. The later it's addressed, the more expensive it becomes to implement. 💡 Accessibility is ingrained in every step of the product development process. 💡 For inclusive user research, it's important to build a recruitment panel community both internally and externally. 💡 Obtaining information about community members allows us to implement those features and characteristics into the product development cycle, while also understanding the diversity of data samples, such as needs, barriers, and preferences. 💡 Developing an Accessibility Maturity Model to help organizations assess whether they are on the right path and identify areas for improvement.
