Last week, Florence R. presented “Navigating the Career Lattice: Building Your Path to Success”. She contrasted a common and a fairly modern career development framework. The career ladder refers to the proverbial corporate ladder. In this framework, career progression occurs in a series of progressively higher positions of increasing responsibility. It typically infers “climbing” your organizational chart. An alternate career development framework is the career lattice. Also known as squiggly careers. This approach promotes seeking career growth opportunities outside your department, company, or industry. It also promotes identifying the competencies and skills to be developed in a future role. What early career advice do you still follow? For me, my mom always told me to never burn my bridges. Always maintain good relationships, even when moving on to a new position or company. Another piece of great advice I received, although I can’t recall from whom, is to always leave a project or office in a better state than I found it. Set a high standard and make it easy for someone else to continue with what you have created. Essentially, don’t leave messes for other people to sort out. Three key highlights for me have been 🔑networking 🔑mentorship 🔑training Without my supportive network of friends, who informed me about how my passion for connecting people with opportunities could translate into the world of recruiting, I may never have discovered this career path. Through mentorship from my Senior Talent Acquision friends with 16 years of experience (🧚🏻Mariann M. , Ben Chulaluxsiriboon, Crystal Phillips🧚🏻) along with dedicating time to learning on LinkedIn and expanding my network, I've seen significant growth. Two years ago, I had just 20 connections; now, I've connected with over 2,000 people with various backgrounds across the country. This expanded network not only opened doors for initial interview opportunities but also paved the way for my first job in tech sourcing, eventually leading to a role in recruiting at an agency. Each step has propelled me toward success and fulfillment in my current position at Nexus Talent Connect, where I continue to grow and excel.
