We're continuing to plan our 2025 Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp through the planetary lawyer project and Green Pro Bono, but we need some help! Who should we invite as a keynote speaker? We had such a successful event last year, with 700+ lawyers from across the world registering across the 2-day event. We thought about having a keynote speaker last year, but we didn't feel like we had the proof of concept yet. Now that we do, we've been throwing out ideas for the April 2025 conference like: Greta Thunberg (for obvious reasons) Arnold Schwarzenegger (for those who don't know, for his work as Governor of CA and as the founder of the Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress (because of the Green New Deal+) John Kerry Al Gore Kamala Harris (would love to hear her suggestions for climate pro bono in this moment) What's your vote? Comment below with these ideas or others! Also, we don't really have a way to get to any of these people... So if you happen to know one of them, PLEASE HELP US! This is what I want for the holidays. The best keynote speaker we can find for our 2025 Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp. That's it.

💚 NEWS 💚 We’ll be following and supporting three huge international court actions this year that are set to change the climate fight. This year, three international courts based in The Netherlands, Germany and Costa Rica will weigh in on climate action as those at the forefront of the climate crisis across the globe ask for advisory opinions on what governments are legally obliged to do about climate change. Led by small island states and global youth organisations, these advisory opinions will clarify what legal obligations their leaders have to: 👉Respond to the climate crisis to protect human rights 👉Control emissions and other activities that cause harm to the ocean and marine environments 👉Address climate change and take meaningful climate action The opinions given by the international courts will shape climate laws and rulings going forward. We’ll be supporting all three of these actions by submitting our own analysis and expertise, as well as bringing you updates on their progress throughout the year. Find out more here:

"You can't convince people..." The three angles to engage with an audience and move them to action. I see the same aspects as pointed out in this post when I coach people to connect with audiences. That is through three levels of communication that work together: Logos - Ethos - Pathos You can't convince people with just reasonong ("because it's logic") You can't convince people with just ethics ("because it's right") You can't convince people with just sentiments ('because you love it") You always need to balance the three!

Attending a climate meeting the day after the re-election of President Trump in the US federal elections may seem like an exercise in masochism. But at the Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) Summit which got underway in Melbourne today, it was refreshing to hear optimistic perspectives from many presenters that Trump's election - while creating volatility and throwing 'sand in the gears' - will ultimately not slow down the broader trend towards clean energy investment and may even create opportunities for countries like Australia to occupy the 'green superpower' space the US will be vacating. As Nathan Fabian from PRI noted in the panel on policy practice, 2024 is not 2016 and we've had immense policy progress since 2016 that has set the framework and built the momentum towards Paris-aligned action. I spoke on a panel ominously titled, 'The Era of Early Warnings is Over: What Boards Need to Know about the Next Wave of Climate Litigation'. The key takeaway? That climate litigation, especially against corporate actors, is likely to continue to grow but that proactive action by boards who take a considered and systemic approach to understanding and managing their climate risk will be a significant safeguard against becoming a likely future target of litigation. Also interesting to hear Tyrone O'Neill from REST (the superfund famously sued in 2017 by member, Mr McVeigh, over its inadequate disclosure and management of climate risk across its portfolio) suggesting the case may have been a wake-up call and that the fund is now on a very different path when it comes to its approach to policy engagement to further the interests of it's predominant young member base.

🔔 How can businesses and trade associations collaborate to drive more ambitious climate policy? ⛔ While many companies publicly support strong climate policies, they often fall short of ensuring their trade associations align with these goals. This misalignment not only undermines corporate climate targets but also weakens collective advocacy efforts. 💡 It's time to bridge this gap. We believe the strategic and financial impact of climate litigation on companies could be significant but remains difficult to measure, in particular the direct and indirect costs. This makes it challenging to integrate climate litigation into credit analysis. Read the full report here > https://okt.to/nc6QM2
