We loved presenting at the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Retailers Association yearly conference in Nashville, TN. Our very own Calvin Webster shared the stage with ABL’s John Bodnovich, City Hive’s Haim C., and many others, assessing the state of the retail trade in the U.S. and specifically in Tennessee. Now we’ve had time to digest the great presentations, here are a few key takeaways for retailers across the country and the distributors who want to sell to them: 1. Curation is only the beginning: "Build it and they will come” was good enough for many years in the package store business, but it’s not cutting it these days. From social media to SMS, ecommerce branding to email marketing, retailers have to execute on a wide range of platforms to compete, which often means clever outsourcing or specialized internal teams. 2. Community is king: The most successful players are embracing events, but not just in-store tastings. From winemaker dinners to large-scale festivals, retailers who are giving wine and spirits enthusiasts places to gather and learn together are coming out on top. 3. Teach, don’t preach: Retailers are offering employees and their customers opportunities at world-class wine and spirits certifications, but that’s not all. Even in the tone of their marketing, the best stores are looking to educate and entertain, not just to sell. We can’t wait to see how Tennessee retailers grow over the next year. Many thanks to Joyce McDaniel for including us and organizing a great event - see you next time! #wine #spirits #ecommerce #socialmedia #socialmediamarketing #nashville #tennessee

So, Diageo have developed a 90% paper bottle for Johnnie Walker. They're quite far behind the likes of Avallen Spirits | BCorp, Quintessential Brands Group, and Aldi UK who have all brought paper bottles to market already. This is a different version, and it's just a test (for now), but better late than never. While it might tick the box for improved sustainability, does it do the same in terms of desirability? Or do the two overlap? Other brands and retailers have already demonstrated that there is demand in retail for paper bottles, but do you think luxury bars and hotels will ever transition to displaying paper bottles behind the bar? And, do we really want them to? #Spirits #Sustainability #Retail #OnTrade 📸 : Diageo

Premiumization, another way of saying steadily rising retail prices, has been a feature of the bourbon market over the last decade. Notwithstanding ever-rising bourbon prices, however, there are still outstanding bourbons that retail for extremely attractive prices. Check out this list along with tasting notes, of ten heavily medaled bourbons that have consistently won in international spirit competitions and still retail on average for around $35 or less: https://trib.al/wUWyKuu

Right now, four of our core spirits are on sale at PA Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores, online for DTC shipping within PA, in our four tasting rooms in the Philadelphia area, and at area farmer’s markets where we sell. Our Summer Spirits Sale is a true cross-channel event, but still…larger brands’ sales across these retail channels dwarf our own. The difficulties of finding and keeping our best people, handling costs that somehow both fluctuate and stay high, and distinguishing between fads and legitimately new things add to stiff competition and tight regulations. It’s an uphill battle for us and other craft brands to break into our markets, find our fans, and stay fresh. But someone must do it to help expand ideas of what spirits can be. Are you a smaller player facing similar big challenges in your industry, or are yours different? https://lnkd.in/exsgyw7E
